DRAW IN BRABIN SHIELD MATCH

WELLINGTON DECLARES IN SECOND INNINGS (!■*■■■ 4HOCIATIOV tILMItU.I WELLINGTON, January 3. Some sparkling cricket was seen to-day in the second and concluding day’s play in the Brabin Shield match on the Basin Reserve, Wellington, which ended in a draw with the honours even. Although the weather was fine and the wicket firm, a cool blustering north-westerly wind made conditions rather cheerless. A feature of Canterbury’s first innings this morning was the splendid stand for the sixth wicket by Rumbold and Burgess, which carried the score from 74 to 179. The innings closed for 220, 45 runs behind Wellington’s total. G. Rabone, the 17-year-old colt, formerly of Palmerston North, bowled remarkably well for Wellington, taking six wickets for 59 runs off 15 overs. He bowled into a strong wind all morning and had all the batsmen tangled up with his off-breaks. Wellington applied the closure in the second innings when five wickets had fallen for 217 runs. Parkin and Dentice put on 101 runs for the second wicket.

Requiring 263 runs to win in about 113 minutes, Canterbury gave a refreshing display of free hitting in the second innings and had 179 up for the loss of six wickets when stumps were drawn at 6 o’clock. Smith scored 70 in 60 minutes, hitting a six and six fours, and Baxter and Morley also played sparkling cricket. While fielding in a “suicide" position at square leg in Wellington's second Innings. Empson, of Canterbury, stopped a shot by Dentice on his left cheekbone and had to be taken to hospital for treatment. He returned to the ground later. Scores:— CANTERBURY • First Innings J.
