NOTES ON THE RACING [From Our Own Reporter.! DUNEDIN, January 2. Bastille Surprises . Great Baby, favourite for the Trial Plate, was first to show out from the start, but at the end of two furlongs Chateaubriand took charge and led Into the straight from Attractive Note, Great Baby, Quick Return, and Bastille. Great Baby drew to the front a furlong from -the post and appeared to be a winner until Bastille challenged on the outside with half of the remainder of the field In a bunch. In a hard tussle Bastille wore , down Great Baby to beat her In the last stride, while Quick Return held-off Pilot’s Love'to beat her by a head. Attractive Note and Vallock wore next. Favourite Wins Great Joy, a staunch favourite for the Domain Trotting Cup, in saddle, followed Lady Milne Into the straight,, and, gradually drawing to the front, recorded a decisive win from Lady Milne, who' comfortably held off Charles Russell, with Rowl half a length away, in front of Wandle Chimes. Danzie Guy lost his rider at the start. - ■ ( Nightdress’s Cup In a pool of close on £4OOO in the Walkouaiti Cup. speculation was widely distributed- The Sandwlchman, who was a slightly better favourite than Valantua. tried to lead throughout; but after leading Nightdress into the straight the latter soon ran to the front to carry On for an easy win. This pair were followed Into the straight by Thermldor, Valantua, . Pink -and Thermldor held on lor third money from Pinle Robe, with Petersham and Valantua next. Cocksure was well up to the home turn, where he weakened badly and retired. Lazybones was In last place throughout. Val-

antua had every chance, but failed to stay on. Impressive Performance Synthetic justified his favouritism for the Bray Memorial Hack Handicap by a narrow but creditable win. He was slow awav, but had run up to the leaders. Gipsy Fair and Dissemble, entering 'the' straight: Gipsy Fair did not last long,, and Synthetic and Dissemble settled down to a sustained struggle, while New Note joined in nearing the post. In an exciting finish Synthetic won by a head from New Note, who got up on the post to beat Dissemble. Astaire was close up next, in front of Gipsy Fair and Prince Flaneur. High-weight Event . , Aggravate, favourite for the 'Highweight Handicap, failed to handle the going, and although in a prominent position turning for home, he was well back at the finish. Supreme Court took charge in the back stretch, and had a three lengths lead at the home turn from Hanlon, Rebel Queen, Great Bramble, and Aggravate, and this was the order into the straight. Supreme Court soon weakened and Rebel Queen joined Hanlon. This pair then had a neck and neck tussle, the former gaining a had verdict. Great Bramble getting up to beat Supreme Court for third money. Tupal and Aggravate followed. Decisive Victory Drumcree, a staunch favourite for the New Year Trot, in harness, outclassed his opponents. He followed Crusheen over the first half of the journey, and, taking charge at the home turn, led into the straight from Jerry Parrish, with a gap to Charles Russell and Mirage. Drumcree Wks not called upon to win by a big margin from Charles Russell, who outstayed Jerry Parrish, Credit . Balance and Mirage pulling up to a walk, were next. Favourite' Beaten Araboa was an expensive proposition in the Orbell Handicap. He was badly favoured early, and although making up ground in the straight, he was unable to make any Impression on the little-fancied Golden Chest who took charge from Invoice and Sea Pox a furlong from home, and won decisively. Sea Fox stayed on for third from Roseman and Invoice. Ponty disputed the lead with Invoice and Sea Fox to the home turn, where he retired. Peacock Makes Good .Lady Mlddleham, a solid first choice for *n. e Hawksbury Hack Handicap, was never within reach of the leaders. Gipsy Fair soon opened up a break on Peacock, Adina, Astaire, and New Note, and this was the order into the straight. Gipsy Fair soon retired, and Peacock showed out from Astaire and Adina In another close finish. Peacock secured a narrow verdict from Astaire, with Adina and Gipsy Fair close up.

A Surprise Win There Was a surprise In the Ellerslle Handicap when Valspear was returned a winner after failures for about two years. He was always handily placed, and ran °n. well to beat the fast-finishing Inquisitor and the pacemaker. Miss Appellant. The favourite. Full Hand, met some trouble during the running, and 1 came home fairly well on the outside to get fourth. Gay Mimic, well placed early, failed to stay. The Hurdles Rozel won the New Year Hurdles In good style. All horses were jumping badly excepting the leaders, Slmlnt and Rozel. and six furlongs from home Little Briton, Kilberls, and Small Boy lost their riders. At this stage Slmlnt, Rozel, and Stansted were at two lengths Intervals, with Erlnatlon. Pyrenees, and Celtic Lad the only others with a chance; Rozel soon ran to the front and scored decisively from Stansted, who easily passed the tiring Simlntr. Erlnatlon was fourth, followed by Celtic Lad and Pyrenees. The Favourite Fails Scandal, a hot favourite for the Midsummer Handicap, had every chance, but was the first beaten. Esquire was hopelessly left, the best of the beginners being Sir Lysander, Scandal, and Heroic Maid. The last-named soon ran to the front, and was clear at the home turn of Scandal, La Vie, Thurn Vaals, and Lady Fox. Heroic Maid was beaten half a head by La Vie, who finished In the middle of the course. Lady Fox was a head away, and Thurn Vaals, Sir Lysander, and Scandal next. Round Up Shows Form Dictate essayed to win the Auckland Racing Club Handicap from end to end, but the Job was given up about 70 yards from the post. Day Wind joined Dictate going down the back, with a bunch comprising Gay Rose, Round Up. Cheval de Voice. The Buzzer, and While Win. Knight of Australia made a rapid move after passing the six furlongs and at the halfmile he was second and pursued by **°u nd and wlllle Win. Within the half-distance Round Up came ?l on f» oI J the rails to win easily from : Mazir, who almost as easily beat Arctic ; King, w^ hj Willie Win fourth, followed , by The Buzzer, Gay Rose, Dictate. Padishah, Cheval de Voice, and Knight of , The erst hall-mile took Msec.Xxnlu 43 2-asec. and ttic last Saitmile 48 i-ssec. , The Derby Hot Box made the running for De-. faulter In the Great Northern Derby. A walk-in start was effected and when the field had settled down these two were followed at short Intervals by Beaupartir, Gay Son, Philcourt, Old Bill, and Peerless. Into the straight Hot Box led Defaulter by a length, with Beaupartlr, Peerless, and Gay Son next. Defaulter drew out slightly at the half-distance and , was content to maintain, that advantage to win without effort from Beaupartlr by three-quarters of a length, with Peerless a neck away. Old Bill was fourth, followed by Hot Box. Gay Son, and Philcourt.

The first half-mile took 52 2-ssee, the mile Imin 45 2-ssec, and the last halfmile 48sec.

A Brilliant Galloper

Lady Meath put up a great performance to win the County Handicap, for she got very • badly away, having only Silver Eagle behind her when the rest were on their way. Penzance and Bronze Emerald were the leaders crossing the top from Pasture, Aero King, The Trimmer, and Blonde Princess, and they entered the straight with Romani and White Gold at the head of the next bunch. Penzance and The Trimmer were fighting it out when Lady Meath wove her way through the field to win by a head from the other two. Melvanui was fourth. Then came Pasture, Romani, White Gold, and Blonde Princess. Palustre’s Double

Palustre repeated her fine performance of the second day with a meritorious but narrow win in the Newmarket Handicap. Royal Bachelor and Palustre broke the line, and, they ran in the lead until the final struggle, when Royal Bachelor gave up. Mon Acre and Tonnerre were closest to the leaders, with Golden Sheila and Paper Slipper next, and Llangollen making a move. Anion, from fifth at the straight entrance, came home very well to get to within a head of Palustre, while Golden Sheila was third another head away. Paper Slipper momentarily looked a winner as he made a dab on the inside, but he weakened again to fourth, a shade behind the third horse. Then in a bunch came Royal Bachelor, Llangollen, Golden Blonde, Bachelor King and Tooley Street. At Good Odds

Respectful, winner of the Glasgow Handicap, had been working well at Te Rapa and prior to the meeting at Ellerslie, but as he iiad not had a race for a long time he was at good odds. Lornacre was pacemaker, entering the straight ahead of Besiege, Respectful, Pirate King, Whirling, Surella, Marie’s Acre, and Trench Fight. Respectful won handily by a neck, with Trench Fight, who was disappointed when making a strong run on the Inside, half a length away. Surella was fourth. Then came Whirling, Pirate King, De Friend, Marie’s Acre, and Entail.

Great Baby also lost ground in her race, but came again early in the run home and finished a creditable second. All these were racing close In to the fence at the point mentioned, and it was noticeable that all those taking a wide berth, including Nightdress and Golden Chest, did not suffer any set-back. .. Ah Early Return Golden Chest ran one of her best races yesterday, and was thus not long In winning a race for her ownertrainer, E. Parker, who a few weeks ago leased her from a former owner, Mr H. Archer,' She was well ridden by the Riccarton apprentice, C, Stokes, whose brother, A. Stokes, was seen to advantage on Nightdress in the cup. Both lads, who come from the West Coast, "are apprenticed to T. H. Gillett Still Speedy

Invoice made his reappearance at Waikouaiti yesterday, and ran a sound race hr the Orbell Handicap. He appeared to be carrying surplus condition, and may do better at Oamaru to-day.

Becoming Useful ' ReUel Queen, recorded another £mpressive win yesterday, and although carrying a.7lb penalty at Oamaru today, she should again be prominent She will be ridden by C. Wilson. Her rider yesterday, J, Murfltt, has had a remarkably gdtod. record in recent months in high-weight events, and next winter should find him amongst the top rank of jumping horsemen. A Long Lapse

Peacock’s win at Waikouaiti yesterday was well overdue, as his previous success was in the same event 12 months ago, when he carried 8-0.
