MOTOR-CAR SKIDS NEAR CHARTERIS BAY

MISS M. BEVERLEY RETIRES FROM TOURNAMENT Miss Margaret Beverley, of Matamata, champion woman tennis player of New Zealand, suffered injuries to her right forearm when a car in which she was travelling skidded and went over the bank while passing another car 'on a hill between Charteris- Bay and Allandale on Sunday. Miss Beverley was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital at 8.45 p.m. on Sunday. Several stitches were sown into her right wrist, and she was suffering considerably from shock.

While Miss Beverley’s condition is not at all serious, it has precluded any further participation in the New Zealand tennis championships tournament now being played at Wilding Park.

GRAVE INJURIES MAN WOUNDED WITH RIFLE BELIEVED TO HAVE FALLEN DOWN BANK (VBESB ASSOCIATION TELEQBAM.) AUCKLAND, January 2. A severe accident was suffered by Reuben Arthur Dexter, aged 32, married. of 30 Meadowbank .road, Remuera, who was admitted to the Auckland Hospital on New Year’s Day with serious head injuries.. It is believed that Dexter was wounded in the head through the sudden discharge of a .22 calibre rifle he was carrying when he fell down a steep bank at Shelly Park beacfi, near Cockle Bay, Other injuries of a minor nature ace considered to have been caused by his fall among boulders. Although gravely wounded and weak from loss of blood, Dexter managed to walk nearly 400 yards to where he had left a dinghy, in which he had rowed from his parents’ bach across an estuary to go shooting earlier in the afternoon. He collapsed on reaching the dinghy, and although he had been seen walking along the beach, his plight was unnoticed for a considerable time.

The injured man was conveyed with some difficulty to his parents’ bach. He was later taken to hospital in an ambulance. His condition was serious. Weil known as an enthusiastic motorist, Dexter was recently reelected chairman 1 of the New Zealand Motor-Racing Drivers’ Association for a second term. He has competed successfully for several years in motorcar races at Muriwai Beach and Hennings’ Speedway, Mangere, and was the winner of a road race for motorcars held at Orakei during Prosperity Week, some years ago. Dexter also races midget cars, and took part in events at the Western Springs Speedway on Saturday night. • LORRY RUNS DOWN HILL EXTENSIVE DAMAGE (vasas ASBOCIATIOM TKLEGBAM.) WELLINGTON. January 2. Extensive damage was done by a motor-lorry owned by the Wellington Concrete Pipe Company, Ltd., which became out of control at the top of one of the steepest hills in Wellington, Rodrigo road, Kilblrnie, and careered wildly down to the bottom, shortly after 6 o’clock on Sunday morning. The lorry narrowly missed a motorcar parked on the right at the top of the road, and charged over to the left,-where it hit another car, carrying it about .33 feet down the road, and smashing in the back and ripping out the seats. It then slewed over to the right again, and mounted the footpath, carrying away a gate and a number of fence palings, and smashing a telegraph pole in two. Continuing down the road, it failed to take a bend, and crashed through the door of an empty garage, coming to rest on its side. None qf the three occupants was seriously injured. The driver, J. Summers, of 11 Imperial terrace, suffered a lacerated wound over the right eye and abrasions to ' the right ear. Mrs M. Danby, of 17 Tirangi road, suffered slight concussion. F. Danby, a metal worker, was not injured. Nearby residents, hearing the sound of splintering woodwork, ran to aid the occupants of the lorry, and assisted them to free themselves from the wreckage. The lorry was extensively damaged.
