SUNSHINE AT ADDINGTON

CANTERBURY PARK TROTTING MEETING

MANY VISITORS ATTEND The Canterbury Park Trotting Club began the New Year in good style—happy augury for its success during 1939. For the first programme of its two-day summer meeting, which opened at Addington yesterday, there was a very large attendance^—probably a record crowd for a trotting meeting on New Year’s Day, when many Christchurch residents are spending holidays away from the city. The weather was fine and warm, and although 'isome disappointment was caused by the decision of Mr G. J. Barton, of Dunedin, not to allow his horse, Indianapolis, to attempt to reduce the existing record for one mile, the gathering was very enjoyable. The cheery New Year greetings heard on all sides, the presence of many visitors who were being ■ warmly welcomed, and the lively music played by Derry’s Military Band, combined to give a carnival spirit to the meeting.

Honoured Guests Mr J. E. W. Cross, president of the club, who recently returned from England. was accompanied by Mrs Cross and Miss Dorothy Cross. Mrs Cross wore a verv smart navy and white check silk crepe ensemble, and a dahlia hat to match her scarf; Miss Cross wore a blue grey wool ensemble and black felt hat with upturned brim. Guests of honour at the president’s table at luncheon included Mr W. McDonald. president of the Nelson Trotting Club, Mr F. Robilliard, of the Ashburton Trotting Club, Mr and Mrs Lilly, visitors from Malay Peninsula, Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., Mr W. ,F. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

SANATORIUM CINEMA FUND

' The lady editor >of “The Press” is still receiving from readers generous response to her appeal, made just before Christmas, for money to buy a cinema plant for the patients at the Cashmere sanatorium. Dr. I. C. Macintyre, medical superintendent of the sanatorium, who is strongly supporting the appeal, considers that £l3O will be needed for the necessary equipment. ; The patients themselves have raised £7O, proof of their keenness and independence. The lady editor hoped, through the generosity of Canterbury residents, to have sufficient money in hand by the autumn to buy the plant. But so wonderfully have readers of “The Press” responded to the appeal that she now feels confident that the plant may be ordered as soon as the patients, many of whom have spent Christmas at their homes, reassemble at the sanatorium.

During the week-end she received with deep gratitude a donation of £1 Is from Lady Wigram and of 10s from Mrs J. G. L. Vernon.
