DERBY MEETING AT HOKITIKA : The Hokitika Whippet Club held its Derby meeting on New Year s Day at the Hokitika racecourse- in beautifully fine weather. There was a large attendance, including owners from Christehurch, Dunedin,- and all parts-of the West Coast. Some good racing was seen. The track was in good,-order after recent rain. The. Hokitika Derby was won by me Christchurch owner, Mr. J. H. falcon, who filled first and second places with Mountain Glen and. Cheetah respectively. The open flat handicap was also won by a Christchurch owner, Mr W J-. Goobe, with White Sister. The middleweight handicap went to the . Dunedin owner, Mr P. McKinley, winning, with Phantom’s Gold. CRICKET GREYMOUTH .BEATS TEAM FROM TAUMARUNUI In brilliant sunshine a friendly, cricket match was played yesterday at Greymouth between the United Club from Taumarunui and Greymouth, and was-won by the home team by an innings and 78 runs. . Greymouth batted first for a total of 234 runic (Buy 43, Vaughan 31, Parrv"27, Tindale.2s, Taylor 33). Bowling for United, Beale took three for 33, Allen three for 50, Smith two for 44, arid Livingstone one for 36. . United replied with 30 runs, no batsman reaching Rouble figures. Bowling for Greymouth, Lee took seven for 2 and Knapp two for 5. In the second innings United made 126 runs (Beale 24, Wackrow 22, Smith 39, Schrceder 16). Bowling for Greymouth, Parry took for for 26, Lee two for 2, Clancy two for 17, Knapp one for. 1, and Marshall one for 33.
