GUESTS AT “HOLLY LEA”

SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATED

Each year a dinner party is held at “Holly Lea,” Manchester street north, to do honour to the memory of the late Mr McLean, the founder of “Holly Lea” and “Quamby.” It is always a particularly pleasant gathering, but this year added importance was given to the party because it marked the silver jubilee of the foundation of “Holly Lea” and the anniversary was suitably celebrated by the ladies of “Holly Lea” and members of the board,, The decorations for the party were particularly beautiful. The wide -hall and handsome staircase were banked with hot-house plants, and the reception rooms were gay with camellias and spring flowers. Music was played by Misses Thelma Cusack, Marjorie Chapman, and Althea Harley Slack, and recitations were given by Miss King. Later an impromptu dance was greatly enjoyed. Those present included the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane) and Mrs Macfarlane, Mr and Mrs H. D. Acland, Mr and Mrs T. J. Maling, Mr and Mrs C. T. Aschman, Mr and Mrs L. B. Evans, Mr and Mrs A. E. Flower, Mr and Mrs H. J. Otley, Bishop C. WestWatson and his daughter, Mrs Stephen Lester, the Rev. Clarence Eaton and Mrs Eaton, Mrs H. A. Young, Dr. Edmund Young, Mrs W. S. Hurse G. Francis, of Salisbury street, well known as. an exhibiting, artist in fine needlework, recently heard from one of the ladies-in-waitihg to Her Majesty the Queen that one of her pictures had been accepted by the Queen. Nurse Francis sent the work (a picture of a Maori girl) to Lady Dawson of Penn for presentation, to the Queen, and a letter from Lady Katharine Seymour to Nurse Francis'was shown to The Press” yesterday. ' “Her Majesty has commanded me to advise you that she is graciously ipleased to; accept,the. charmingv Mabri picture which you'have, sent for pres--entation to her/Ut said. VThe QUeen •much admires y6pr work, and thanks ypu warmly for the gift. POUND DAY

Yesterday, which was observed as Pound Day at St. Anne’s Home, Papanul road, friends and, supporters of the home gave great encouragement to the Sisters,Mn their good work by, visiting the home, bearing gifts m kind and money and by buying at the stalls, on which'were displayed attractive goods mdde by the girls of St. Anne’s. The reception rooms were gay with flowers, grown by the girls; and their handwork, which included examples of Italian embroidery, richelieu work, hem-stitchirtg, and era-, broidery found a ready sale. Another Stall that was well patronised was that stocked with marmalade,, preserves, and potted meat, made at tne home. This year’s-Pound Day was one of the most successful held at St. Anne’s;

SOCIAL AT SEADOWN

Many friends gathered at Seadown to honour Miss Mabel McCully and Miss Brenda Hewson, whose marriages will, take place shortly. In making a presentation of a silver tea service to Miss McCully and of a brass, log-box to Miss B. Hewson, Mr Edgar spoke of the work the guests of honour had.done for the district. Messrs Cam and Hughes also spoke. Miss McCully has been secretary and treasurer pi the local tennis club for five years. Miss C. Benbow supplied music for dancing, and Mr R. J. Edgar acted as master of ceremonies. Miss M. Hewson and Mr Robinson won a Monte Carlo dance. , Among those present were Mr and Mrs R. J. Edgar, Mr and Mrs J. McCully, Mr and Mrs G. T.
