HOCKEY

SECOND ROUND PLAYED EVEN GAMES ON SATURDAY aii three senior games in the Canterbury HocLy Association's competitions were closelv contested on Saturday. The weather was fine, but the grounds were soft and slippery. Scoring the only goal of the match in the first five minutes, belwyn beat Redcllfts in a game that lacked science and finish. University gave a greatly improved display in the match against Trinity, but was defeated by the odd goal lb five. Although Technical beat Sydenham by three goals to one, the game was evenly contested all through and produced some cleVer stick play and combination on both sides. 1 The following table shows the positions

SELWYN V. BEDCLIFFB The game between Selwyn and Hedciiffs was fast and keen, but was a poor display ot scientific hockey. Following were the teams:— Selwvn H. Shaw, A’, Meafne. N. Selwyn’s half line was patchy, and though the defence was sound the halves failed to feed the forwards to advantage, M. Lohrey and J. Wormald worked hard; but the wings were badly beaten ,by the Redcllfls halves. Redcllfls backs were good, 3. Burke playing a cool, heady game all through. After Selwyn’s score the game was hard and too willing to produce good hockey, and the referees had to Issue several cautions to players on both sides. Half-time came with the score:

.Selwyn 1, Redcliffs 0. The second spell was even more willing, and there was far too much pushing and barging. Redcliffs gained the upper hand and forced play into Selwyn’s circle by a combined effort, and Thomson tooka quick shot which went wide. Redcliffs kept up the pressure, and only good work by Shaw prevented a score. Selwyn gradually forced play to the other end, Lohrey and Wormald leading the attack. The Redcliffs goalkeeper had a busy time for a few minutes and.made two clever saves. E. Radcllffe and R. Thomson came through the centre to be stopped by Hocking.
