MAGISTRATE'S COURT

TUESDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) REMANDED ON THEFT CHARGE Rawei Arthur Wilkinson (Mr A. B. Hobbs), a storeman, aged 32, and Her* bert Francis Hempenstall (Mr R. A. Young), a lorry-driver, aged 44, were jointly charged with the theft of four drums of petrol valued at £25 Bs. the property of the Vacuum Oil Company, Detective-Sergeant T. E. Holmes applied for a remand until April 28, stating that Wilkinson and Hempenstall were associated with two other men who had been remanded until that date.

The remand was granted, bail of self £IOO and one surety of £IOO being allowed in each case. An application for the suppression of the names was refused. Both men were ordered to report daily to the police. SIX MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT Six months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on William Anderson, a bootmaker, aged 55, who pleaded guilty to stealing a bag containing medical supplies and instruments of a total value of £l2, the property of Francis Oswald Bennett. Detective-Sergeant Holmes said Constable G. W. Alty saw accused carrying the bag and stopped, him. Anderson could not explain his possession of it and was arrested. The doctor did not know the bag had been stolen. Anderson had a number of previous convictions. Accused said drink was responsible for his lapse. TRAFFIC OFFENCES Penalties were. imposed as follows for offences against the traffic regulations, the cases being brought by the City Council: — „„ , Speeding—Hugh Agnew. 20s; Leslie Dwight, 20s; Leslie Madden, £2. Overloading motor-cycle—Bernard O’Connell. 10s. Parking over time limit—Henry Charles van Asch, 10s. Obstructing fire plug—Walter J. Thompson, 20s. Cycling negligently—John Allen Hewitt, 10a. , Cycling without a light—Leonard Kimber, 10s. The following penalties were imposed in cases brought by the Transport Department: — No driving licence— Harry Lawrence, ss: Cyril Willis Brewer. 10s. Exceeding speed limit —Cyril Willis Brewer, 30s. . . Exceeding speed limit m heavy traffic vehicle—John Sugrue, £2. Passing stationary tram —Donald Gillanders. 10s.

Painter. £4 ss; Christchurch City Council v. Anthony Hesse. £l2 12s 3d. JUDGMENT SUMMONS On a judgment, summons. D. S. Thompson was ordered to pay G. G. Lockwood £3 16s forthwith, in default four days’ imprisonment, the issue of the warrant to be suspended so long: as 10s a week is paid.
