TWO NEW DIESEL BUSES
SERVICE NEXT MONCT
BODIES BDSbT ST CIN
Two new diesel-engine buses, nam ready for service, will probably not be ppt into operation by the Christchurch Tramway Board until the beginning of May, The chassis were imported from England at a cost of £1875 each, and the bodies were built in the board’s own workshops. These new vehicles will bring the board’s fleet of oil-driven buses up to 12, and they will bfe welcomed by the traffic officers of the board not only to supplement the bus services at peak periods but* to enable vehicles to be withdrawn for overhaul. They are of the “Q” type, with the engine behind the driver, as in some of those now running on the Linwood route.
Mr H. E. Jarman, secretary to the board, said yesterday that the diesel buses on the Linwood route had now been in operation for 12 months Traffic on the route was increasing rapidly, and the buses had been entirely satisfactory. New buses were needed as stand-bys for the exist mg vehicles and also to supplement the Linwood diesel bus and the North Beach and Richmond trolley-bus services at busy times. Mr Jarman said it was seven years since trolleybuses had first been used on the North Beach route.
