BLENHEIM, April M. A sequel to the Christchurch story of the Borstal escapee was an appearance in the Children’s Court this morning, when a 17-year-old youth was remanded by a Justice of the Peace to appear before the Magistrate to-mor-row on a charge of escaping from custody. It was gathered that the. alleged escapee, after eluding escort at Lyttelton, and securing a motor-cycle, decided to transfer to a powerful motorcar as more suitable to his plans for a daring dash for liberty, remaining hidden in Christchurch until early on Sunday morning. It is said that he took a valuable three-seater car, belonging to Mr T. J. B. Burns, of Christchurch, and drove northwards. Near Blenheim yesterday, he allegedly entered the homestead of Mr R. Forsyth, Riverlands, removing a gold watch and about £8 in cash.
The theft was reported to the police, also the presence in the district of a car tallying with the description of the vehicle missing from Christchurch. This resulted in the car being trailed to Okaramio, on the road to Nelson As the police car stopped in front of the hotel, the fugitive dashed out and climbed into the car, but when he saw the game was up he quietly submitted to arrest.
