DECREASE OF FOURTEEN REGISTRATIONS

MEETING OF CHRISTCHURCH

EXECUTIVE

A total of 286 returned soldiers in the Christchurch district registered at the employment office of the association for the fortnight ended April 9, said the report presented to a meeting of the executive last evening, when the vice-president (Mr A. E. Haynes) presided.

The report said that the number was a reduction of 14 on that of the previous fortnight, and comprised 245 registrations from the previous fortnight, five new registrations, 33 from New Brighton and three from Sumner. A total of 122 men had been subsidised for 137J days at a cost of £54 9s, compared with 137 men for 146 i days at a cost of £sl 19s 6d for the previous fortnight. Work was found for men for 21 days without subsidy. The men employed on subsidy for the period were engaged as follows: —Work at club 16, New Brighton 14, Sumner 3, disabled soldiers’ gardens 7. The general assistance committee’s report said that 87 grants of groceries, coal, and miscellaneous articles bad been made for the fortnight This was an increase of six on the number for the previous period. The secretary (Mr E. F. Willcox) reported that the canteen fund grant for February and March was £369. Advice was received that the annual debate between the executive and the association’s debating club would be held on July 19. Eight applications for active membership and two for club membership were granted.

It was agreed to congratulate the president (Mr W. E. Leadley) on the success of the annual Anzac reunion and to thank him for his services to the association. It was also decided to thank Mr H. W. Wilkinson and his assistants for their work at the reunion, and to express appreciation to Count Felix von Luckner for his attendance at the function.
