WAR BURSARIES GRANTED

RANGIORA HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS ANOMALIES IN regulations DISCUSSED War bursaries at the rate of £5 per annum have been granted to six Pupils of the Rangiora High School, elating from the beginning of the year. This information was conveyed in a tetter from the Director of Education, which was received at the monthly meeting of the High School Board at Rangiora last night. . , , The letter also stated that no award could be made to one other P u j?u, as the War Pensions Board stated that “the board being of the opinion that the father’s death was not due to war service, is unable to give a certificate as required by clause 1 of the war bursary regulations.” The chairman, Mr C. I. Jennings, explained that he had taken the matter up with the local Returned Soldiers Association, because indications were that the death of the child’s father was due to war disability. Mr N. Goldsbury: It seems that if a returned soldier is living his child is eligible for a bursary, but not if the father is dead. The thing Is absurd. It was decided to await the motion from the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and if no satisfaction can be . obtained to make direct application to the Minister for Defence (the Hon. r. Jones), and also to seek the support of Mr C. Morgan Williams, M.P. In his report the acting-principal, Mr G. C. Beattie said that the roll number was 215 —118 girls and 97 boys.
