THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

CAMPAIGN BY CITIZENS' ASSOCIATION OPENING DATE FIXED FOR APJUL 29 The candidates of the Citizens' Association in the municipal elections will not open their campaign until April 29, although Labour Party candidates have been addressing meetings since last Tuesday. At the first meeting of Citizens' Association candidates the Mayoral nominee, Dr. J. Guthrie, will be one of the speakers. April 29 has been chosen by the association sc that the interruption of the Easter holidays and Anzac Day will be avoided. Until May 11—which is polling day—the campaigning will be intensive.

The association has not yet announced a full, "ticket" either for the City Council or for the North Canterbury Hospital Board. Two more candidates are to be announced for the City Council and three more for the Hospital Board. An announcement about the selection of candidates, it is said, will be made very soon. Party canvassing is maintaining a steady increase in the number on the district electors' supplementary roll. Yesterday morning about 1400 applications for enrolment were received at the City Council, nearly all of these applications being forwarded by the Citizens' Association and by the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee. The roll will close at 5 p.m. to-morrow, but it is not expected that there will be a heavy rush of applications on the last day- ,At present the number on the supplementary list stands about 7500. The lodging of nominations for candidature in the municipal elections has only just begun. The first nominations were received • on Friday by the returning officer (Mr J. S. Neville), and yesterday four more nominations were lodged—those of Messrs F. G. Thomas, F. Kelson, A, H. Scales, and H E. Denton. AH are Labour candidates for the City Council, and Mr Denton is also a candidate for the Hospital BoarcL_ ■
