MAGISTRATE'S COURT

MONDAY (Before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M.) REMANDED Hugh Lowther (Mr W. R. Lascelles), a coal merchant, aged £3, was charged with having received from John Searle a 400-gallon tank, valued at £8 10s, the property of John Burns and Company, Ltd., knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. John Searle, a truck-driver, aged 38, was charged with having stolen the tank. Mr F. D. Sargent appeared for Searle., Detective-Sergeant T. E. Holmes, applying for a remand until April 28, said that there was a large sum involved, and there were other charges to be investigated. He asked for substantial bail in the case of Lowther. A remand was granted in both cases, Lowther being granted bail in his own recognisance of £IOOO and two sureties of £IOOO each, and ordered to report daily to the police. Searle was allowed bail in his own recognisance of '£2s and one surety of £25. He was also ordered to report daily to the police. FOUR CHARGES Three charges of having committed unnatural offences and one of an attempt to commit such an offence were preferred against Frederick Eggelton, a clerk, aged 30, who appeared on remand. Mr W. R. Lascelles appeared for Eggelton, and agreed to a further remand until next Thursday. Detec-tive-Sergeant Holmes said the police would then be ready to proceed with the cases.

MAINTENANCE COURT (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) DISOBEDIENCE OF ORDERS

For the disobedience of maintenance orders, the following penalties were in Henry" Herbert Chevelier Gillard was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the issue of the warrant to be suspended so long as 10s a week is paid off arrears in addition to the amount of the current order. Frederick Charles Price was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, the issue of the warrant to be suspended so long as 5s a week is paid off arrears in addition to the amount of the current order. Robert Roy Harper was sentenced to one month's imprisonment the issue of the warrant to be suspended so long as 2s 6d a week is paid off arrears in addition to the amount oi the current William Richard Ernest DryAon was sentenced to one month s> -unthe issue of the warrant to be suspended so long as 30s a week current maintenance is paid.
