OTAGO MEDICAL SCHOOL

TO THE EDITOR Of TUB PRESS. Sir,—As a New Zcalandcr abroad, one recalls the frequent warnings oi the Dean of the Otago Medical School to the Dominion and the parents of its growing manhood that there were too many medical doctors in N:nv Zealand, and, in consequence, the university limited the number of medical student entrants in recent years *ct. at a New Zealand University dinner here in London last week, the late Dean of the Otago Medical School. Sir Lindo Ferguson, raid: "The non-return of New Zealand doctors was undoubtedly a problem, and I was often faced with pressing requests by the Minister for Health lor doctors, which I could not meet." One comes, therefore, to the conclusion that the policy of limitation of entrants to he medical course has been one of short-sightedness and parochial narrow-mindedness. Much to our delight most of us doctors domiciled here have staked our claims in this hospitable country, England—dear isle, set in a silver sea—and the revealing of such a narrow and admittedly mistaken policy of the Otago Medical School makes it about as popular as a polecat at a picnic, and'makes us pleased that no longer can we have our brains squandered by the pick and shovel wages of a should-be vigorous Dominion.—Yours, etc., MEDICO. London, January 24, 1938.
