—* — VIEWS OF TOWN-PLANNING OFFICER "NO REASON FOR COMPLACENCY" (P3J3SS ASSOCIATION' TELEGHAM.) DUNEDIN, March 9. Speaking last evening on "Health in Relation to Town Planning" to members and associates of the New Zealand branch of the Royal Sanitary Institute now in conference, Mr J. W. Mawson, Government Town Planning Officer, Wellington, said that New Zealand statistics gave no reason for complacency. "There are," ho said, "1435 medical practitioners registered in New Zealand, one to every 1096 persons, the highest ratio in the world. I believe, in the last full year for which statistics are available, there were 101,021 in-patients in the public hospitals, equal to 6.4 per cent, of the population, and 118,256 out-patients, equal to 7.5 per cent, of the population, a total of 13.9 per cent., excluding the numbers cared for in private hospitals. 'The total cosfrof the administration of public hospitals for 1936, excluding charitable aid, was £1,341,000. During the same year the total number of mental patients under oversight, care,' or control was 9227, of whom 7860 were housed in mental institutions at a cost of £524,310."
