PRELIMINARIES TO BE HELD
TO-MORROW
Athletes are now assembling in Christchurch from all centres to compete in the national amateur athletic championships, which will be held to-morrow and on Saturday. The fields will contain some of the finest athletes seen on the Lancaster Park oval in recent years, including the two Empire Games champions. C. H. Matthews and V. P. Boot, and others of New Zealand's Empire Games team. As the golden jubilee meeting, the championships will attract special attention Hue year. They have been allotted to the Canterbury Centre in recognition of the foundation o£ the sport on a national basts in this province. The Canterbury Centre is taking steps to ensure that the meeting is oiie of the best in the history of Uie spr-ji/rierc, and with the support'of strong containing practically all the Do-ininii.-,ns leading athletes, there:,.ai-e prospects o< a notable meeting. New national standards for athletes were set out by the council of the New Zealand. Amateur - Athletic. minutes received by the Canterbury Centre last evening. All athletes recording performances equivalent to these standards or exceeding them will receive certificates.
