PROFITABLE PRESENT SOHO A GIFT HORSE [By CARBINE.] Soho, winner of the Napier Perk Cup, was a present to his owner, Mr G. G. Beatson, from Mr G. D. Beatson, president of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club. The Beatsons have done well as amateur riders, and when Mr 3. G. Beatson won the Duke of Gloucester Cup on Soho his father presented Lim with the horse. At Napier the gift horse secured for his new owner a handy stake, arid a rice trophy, and paid a substantial double-figure dividend. Soho is said to be a deceptive track worker, but he had been working well prior to the meeting and several "regulars" at Hastings assessed his cnance highly.

WRACK. SOLD

NOTED AMERICAN STALLION A TASMANIAN BUYER The sale is reported of the American stallion Wrack, who for several yenrs has been at the stud at Durbar Lodge \shburton. Wrack will take up stud outies at Mr A. E. Tatlow's stud farm in Tasmania. Mr Tatlow visited New Zealand some years ago and took back with him a number of well-bred trood mares, including Belle Logan, the dam of Logan Derby. Mr Tatlow is an extensive breeder and owns Globe Derby, the leading stallion in Australia, and the sire of Walla Walla Wrack, who was imported as a seven-year-old in 1924. held a record of 2min 2 2-ssec, and in a hard racing career he was one of the best performers m America, and was known as "the iron horse."

In New Zealand he was an immediate success, and early in his career he left Wrackler, the greatest ail-

round performer New Zealand has known, for he won the Great Northern and New Zealand Derbies and the New Zealand Cup as a pacer, while as a trotter he won the Dominion Handicap. He is also the sire of the champion pacer Indianapolis, three times winner of the New Zealand Cup and the holder of the mile record of 2min 0 2-ssec. From 1932 to 1935 Wrack was the champion stallion of New Zealand. He has proved a great success as a progenitor of early speed, and at either pacing or ti-otting his stock have proved brilliant racehorses and possessed of exceptional stamina. Wrack will be shipped to Tasmania by Messrs H. Matson and Company in the Maunganui on March 17. Great Breeding The young English-bred sire Lo Zingaro, whose stock &o?d very well when offered for the flist time at the yearling sales at Melbourne last week, belongs to the No. 4 family. He is by Sclario, premier sire of England in 1937. from tho good mare Love in Idleness, by Bachelor s Double from Cornfield, by Isinglass. Love in Idleness, dam of Gay Lotnario. was the best mare of her da* and her wins included the Oaks Yorkshire Oaks, and Rous Memorial Stakes. She won more than £12.000 in stakis

HAZOOR CAN JUMP

HIS DEBUT AS HURDLER

(By CARBINE.)

Hazoor made his debut as a hurdler at Bulls, and as good reports of his jumping ability had been received, many expected him to run prominently.

Hazoor soon showed that he can jump, but before the race was over he created a serious doubt as to whether he likes hurdling. He made an elTort to shirk the hurdle nearing the straight, and he went through the hist one. If he takes kindly lo the game, he shou'.d do well. He would have won at Bulls but for the two bad jumps, and he may show less inclination to shirk when the courses are softer. This, week Hazoor will revert to fiat rf.cing and contest the Wairarapa County Cup, the chief event on the programme of the Carterton Racing Club, of which his owner, Mr W. Howard Booth, is president.

TURF GOSSIP Reminder Nominations for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps will close at 5 pjn. on March 18. Leading Horsemen At the conclusion of last week's racing, C. G. Goulsbro took first place in the jockeys winning list with 53 wins, and L. J. Ellis is in second place with 52. B. H. Morris is third with 46, and there is then a gap to W Broughton with 34. The next on the list are S. Wilson 32, R. McTavish 28, H. Wiggins 25. G. Tattersall 24. R E. Home 21, P. Atkins 19, and A. E.' Ellis 19. Winning Trainers T R George is at the head of the winning trainers' list with 18 winners, and D. J. McDonald and L. G. Morris are next with 17 each. Others are:— F. Smith 16, P. T. Hogan 15, H. S. Greene, F. D. Jonas, L. Knapp, R. E. McLellan, 14 each; H. and A. Cutts, A Cook, and R. S. Bagby, 13 each; F.' A. Roberts, I. Tinsley, and J. F. Tutchen 12 each. Doubtful Prospects Silver Ring returned to Greymouth on Saturday night, and advice from Greymouth states that he did not suffer any ill-effects from his race in the Peninsula Cup. His effort in this race did not point to his prospects at Trentham but evidently he is to make the trip, as he has been nominated for the'Manawatu meeting. For Awapuni

Riccarton stable? are represented by the following in the M&nawatu nominations:— Kindly, Studley Royal, Royal Chief, Phalanx, Good Passage, and Paper Slipper. Abandoned Meeting It was mentioned by trainers at Bulls on Saturday that the Woodville executive is paying hslf the expenses incurred in sending horses to the recently abandoned meeting.

Trainer in Trouble A cable message frcm Sydney a week or two ago reported a hostile demonstration against After Six at Canterbury Park. Among the demonstrators was a well-known trainer, who was called befcie the stewards and informed that it was the intention to recommend the Australian Jockey Club to cancel his licence. Awapuni Gold Cup For some years no gold cup has been attached to the awapuni Gold Cup contest, and it is all the more pleasing to find that Mr J. P. Innes, a comparative newcomer to the ranks of the stewards of the Manawatu Racing Club, has given an exceptional valu able trophy for the race to be decided on the opening day of the club's autumn meeting on March 25. The cup, which is oi 15 carat gold, stands BJin high, and measures sJin across at its extreme points. It is of most artistic design, and is contained in a rich rosewood case having separate compartment for the cup and its rosewood base but which qtvcs t»-e cup, which has a removable top, the appear &nce of being intact when ,ying therein. The value ol the cup is set down at £75, ar.d it can be accepted that it is the most valuable trophy which has been attached to the event. -————=========

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Acceptances for the Cheviot meeting will be received up to next Monday. Nominations for the New Brighton Challenge Stakes, 1939, will close on March 17. Nominations for the Greymouth meeting will close on March 22. A meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association will be held at 7.30 p.m. to-morrow. Starting Times

The single pool system of betting will be in operation at the Timaru meeting on Saturday, and the first race will be at 12.30 p.m. Good acceptances have been received and class is well represented. The races will be run in the following order:—l2.3o p.m., Temuka Handicap; 1.10 p.m., Trotting Stakes; 1.50 p.m., Scadown Handicap; 2.30 p.m., Timaru Cup; 3.10 p.m., Kingsdown Handicap; 3.50 p.m., Nursery Stakes; 4.30 p.m., Wai-iti Handicap; 5.10 p.m., Washdyke Handicap. A Possibility

Wharrun, a four-year-old gelding by Nelson Derby from Logan Lou, will possibly be favourite for the Temuka Handicap at Timaru, and while he has had little racing experience, he showed

speed at the Wellington meeting last month, when he won over a mile and a half in 3min 27sec, defeating amongst others Myrtle de Oro, Maltravers, and Storm Signal. He may find the strongest opposition from the erratic, but speedy, Francisco, and Fine Art, the latter long overdue for a win, but a good pacer. Norham Lady Norham Lady, after her victory at Invercargill on Saturday, will be well fancied for the Seadown Handicap: but the race is open and there will be many admirers of Laurene Wood, Effie Parrish, and Royal Doulton. The Timaru Cup Morello won nicely over two miles at Hutt Park on Saturday and the Timaru Cup may not be beyond one of his calibre. He will meet better class than was opposed to him last week, and Renown's Best, after her sensational win at New Brighton in 4min 26sec, is not likely to be overlooked. Blair Athol is better than average and Recess has shown improvement of late. Renown's Best is the early

favourite, with Morello and Recess well fancied. An Unbeaten Trotter Peggotty enjoys an unbeaten record to date and she will have a chance to add to her record in the Kingsdown Handicap. She is a trotter of great possibilities and with Listowel and Prince Harvester will probably nil the places. A Strong Field The field for the Washdyke Handicap is a particularly strong one and the presence of Parisienne will add interest to the race. She is a class pacer and may be capable of conceding 12 yards to Morello and 24 yards to Recess. Classic Races

For the two classic races to be decided at the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday the fields are not unwieldy, but with five unhoppled trotters in the Trotting Stakes and nine two-year-olds in the Nursery Stakes, the fields are big enough to provide excellent contests. None of the horses engaged in the Trotting Stakes has appeared at a totalisator meeting. Taiki, who raced in the Challenge Stakes at Auckland, is the only public performer in the Nursery Stakes. As racehorses' they are unknown, but matinee meetings have shown that juvenile form is right up to standard. Following are particulars of those engaged:— f TROTTING STAKES J. T.
