ST. JOHN AMBULANCE SERVICE
TO THE EDITOB or THE PRESS. Sir, —During a discussion the other day among a group of citizens on the great service so faithfully and steadily being rendered to the city and Canterbury by our local St. John Ambulance Brigade, the question arose as to how the organisation was being financed and how the funds were being expended. Of course, there are some items of expenditure which are unnecessary to detail—the cost and upkeep of the \ ambulances, the t>urchas& nf nmVin-
i lance necessaries, the annual charges 1 for the headquarters in Peterborough i street; but there are other matters t about which we who discussed were - quite ignorant. Some thought no Y wages or salaries were paid at all, but - that seems rather absurd to me. The e ambulance drivers, I take it, must be s paid, and so probably must some of e the nurses. Just how much such sal--3 aries or allowances amount to. many 1 of the brigade supporters would like - to learn. e I have again often watched and adY mired the brigade on parade, but as I 1 looked on the officers, so smartly unie formed, I wondered if the uniforms r were paid for out of the brigade funds i and if these officers were granted als lowances or honoraria to meet the ex--3 censes of their positions.—Yours, etc., y CIVIS. February 26, 1938. " t“The St. John Ambulance Association is financed by voluntary contributions from the public and private concerns,” said Dr. J. Restell Thomas (chairman of the St. John Ambulance f Association) when this letter was res ferred to him. “The ambulance drivers are paid, but if the correspondent wants more copious retails he should study the financial statement of the association.”]
