PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS
SALARIES AND STAFFING IN REVIEW
MINISTER’S DISCUSSIONS WITH INSTITUTE
(PMS» ASSOCIATION TBLSGRAU.) WELLINGTON, February 28. The Minister for Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) announced that he has been in consultation with representatives of the executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute on the staffing of primary schools and the salaries of primary school teachers. Mr Fraser said that the discussion was exploratory and preliminary to further discussions, which would probably occupy some considerable time. The representations of the institute would receive further consideration by himself and the Education Department, and ultimately the matters involved would be submitted to the Government. Mr Fraser said that he x’ecogmsed the institute as the only organisation that could speak for all grades of primary school teachers, and he proposed to confine his negotiations to that organisation. Any representations from
the Headmasters’ Association, the Men Teachers’ Guild, or the Women Teachers’ Association should be forwarded through the institute. Full consideration would be given to every such representation or point of view. 'The Minister also announced that the grading of primary school teachers would be considered by a committee representative of the Education Department and the New Zealand Educational Institute.
