TINSMITHS’ DISPUTE SETTLED
AGREEMENT ON ALL MAJOR POINTS A complete settlement on all matters except the provision for ship repair work was reached in Conciliation Council at Christchurch yesterday in the Northern, Wellington, Taranaki, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland tinsmiths’ and sheet-metalworkers’ dispute. The terms of the settlement provide for the following wages:—Journeymen sheet-metal workers, 2s 9d an hour; workers engaged on soldering milk nnd cream cans, 2s 7£d; workers engaged on work other than that provided for at the 2s 9d rate, 2s 6d; other adult workers, 2s 4Jd. Wages for boys and youths will be those fixed in the engineers’ award. Shift workers will receive an extra payment of 3s a shift. There will be a 40-hour week with work on five days (Monday to Friday inclusive). The award applies to the whole of New Zealand except Nelson and the West Coast, and will remain in force for 12 months. The wage rates will come into operation oh March 5. The dispute was between the Amalgamated Engineering and Allied Trades Industrial Association of Workers and the New Zealand Ironmasters’ Associ- , ation and other employers. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) presided and the assessors were as follows:—Employers, Messrs W. Harvey, E. E. Brooking, G. R. McKay, J E. Wheeler, H. Brown, D. I. Macdonald, and J. C.
