MELBOURNE. November 10. Victoria beat the New Zealand cricket team by five wickets to-da>* after a bright innings, a feature of which was the partnership of Lee and Hassett.

Heavy rain fell overnight, but the weather was fine when play was iesumed. The wicket was goi>d.

Though beaten, the New Zealanders' performance was favourably commented upon. The team departed for Sydney to-night and will play there on Friday, leaving :n the Awatea for Wellington en Tuesday.

The Victorians set out to make the 293 runs required to beat New Zealand. They had lost no wicket* for 35 runs at stumps yesterday. Lee and Rigg continued the innings to the bowling of Parsloe and Yiviar.. Parsloe had recovered from the effects of his injury yesterday. Rigg was out leg before to Vivians third ball, leaving Lee and Gregory carrying on. Both batsmen played cautiously with their eyes on the runs still required.

When Gregory reached 12, he tned to swing a ball from Vivian and was caught by the wicket-keeper, Lowry. A leg decision was given, but it was afterwards changed.

Rapid Scoring

Hassett came in with two down for 62. When the bowling changed to Roberts and Moloney both batsmen increased their scoring rate and began a rapid run-making partnership, which set Victoria's hopes soaring. Hassett hit two fours and a six off Moloney, who was taken oilVivian returned to the attack. The batsmen were again cautious but soon opened out, placing fours all over the field. Victoria's century came up in 117 minutes. At 41, Lee survived a leg appeal from a ball from Roberts. When Lee was 47 and Hassett 27, the bowling was again changed. Parsloe relieved Vivian in an effort to break up the batsmen's determined stand, which contributed 50 runs in 33 minutes.

The luncheon adjournment came with the score two for 133.

Resuming, the batsmen pulled, swung, and defied all the efforts of the various bowlers to dislodge them. Eighty-two minutes together at the wickets gave the partnership its century. The batsmen were still playing with the utmost confidence, keeping the fieldsmen busy and steadily wrecking New Zealand's prospects. Lee reached 72. when misfortune overtook him. He swung hard at a ball from Lamason, which was smartly fielded by Wallace, at third slip, and returned to the wicketkeeper, while Lee was trying to snatch a single. His brilliant innings had taken 183 minutes. The partnership yielded 112.

New Zealand's Hopes Fade

Hassett was 69 when Bromley batted. Moloney gave Bromley a life when he was four, dropping a catch off Vivian. Parsloe, was not so merciful. When Bromley full-tossed a ball from Donnelly, Parsloe took a difficult catch running backwards. He fell heavily on his head, but held the balL Lgdward joined Hassett (75), but Vivian caught and bowled him with his first ball.

With 99 runs required for Victoria to save the match, and Barnett in, New Zealand took heart again. Barnett, however, stood firm, though, when nine, he made a fierce swing at Parsloe which bruke his bat.

Various bowling changes were unable to move Hassett, who took everything that came with equanimity. He was obviously playing for his century, which he got after 177 minutes, including six fours. Barnett also batted brilliantly. By tea time New Zealand's hope? of victory had completely faded. The score then was five for 245. With only 48 to make to pass NewZealand's score, and five more batsmen in hand, Hassett and Barnett stayed together. Hassett survived several appeals. The required score was gained at 5 o'clock. Hassett's 127 took 239 minutes.
