ROAD TO WEST COAST
FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS ANNOUNCED
Further improvements to the Christchurch-Kumara State highway are announced, and a tender ha* been accepted for the erection cf three cottages to accommodate some of the roadmen who are to be per* manently stationed on the road bj the Government.
A contract has been let by the Public Works Department to British Pavements (Christchurch), Ltd., for the bituminous paving of the section of the highway between West Melton and Kirwee. As the first work to be done under this contract, the existing one-coat sealing on the length of 21 miles between West Melton and Sandy Knolls is to be topped with a plant-mixed smooth coat of bitumen. The contractors will then apply a plant-mixed payfT ment of bitumen on the gravelled length of road. 6\ miles, from Sanfl>" Knolls to Kirwee. A length of threequarters of a mile in Darfield township is to be similarly treated. When this contract i.~ completed there will be a road of high quality surface from Christchurch w Kirwee.
