LAWN TENNIS

NOT ENOUGH COURTS

AVAILABLE

PLAYERS KEPT WAITING

FOR GAMES

UNITED CLUB'S OFFER

ACCEPTED

A complaint that not sufficient courts were made available each Saturday for players in the senior mixed competition was discussed at a meeting of the competitions committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last evening. The association decided to take advantage of an offer which had been received from the United Club allowing the committee to use two of its courts for the senior men's competition. Members agreed that the use of these courts would help to.solve the problem, and it was further decided to write to clubs with teams entered in the senioi men's competition, advising them that matches should be started punctually. A suggestion that the competitions committee should revert to the old method of playing one set of nine-up instead of three sets of six-up, was made by Mr C. N.Franklin. He complained that players in the senior mixed grade were kept waiting for games each Saturday while courts reserved for the senior men's competition were not being used. The courts used for this competition should be made available earlier.

If advantage was taken of the United Club's offer, two extra courts would be obtained, said the Chairman, Mr W. A. Clothier.

Mr S. W. Jameson* suggested that the committee should advise senior teams that unless they started matches punctually, the courts would be made available for players in the senior, mixed grade. "It would be a retrograde step to go back to. sets of nine up," remarked Mr J. Mercer. The delay was n6t only in the senior men's competition. . The other teams were also unpunctual. An application from the North Beach Club to include a team in the senior men's competition was refused on the ground that the team which it was proposed to enter was not of the required standard.
