MARKETS REMAIN QUIET

PRICES GENERALLY MAINTAINED

Markets were quiet on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday with dealings restricted. There were a number of price movements, but levels were generally well maintained.

AUCKLAND Sales on 'Change

DEALINGS COMPLETED

Government New Zealand Government 4 per cent, stock, due 1946, changed hands at £lO3, and more was wanted at that price. National Bank of New Zealand had dealings at prices ranging from 58s 6d to 57s 6d, market closirig 58s buyers, 59s sellers. Bank of New Zealand were firmer on buyers' offers, 445. New Zealand Refrigerating 10s paid were fractionally firmer with buyers and dealings at 9s 9d. sellers at 9s 10d.- Christchurch Gas shares had business at 26s 9d, and further buyers at 26s 6d failed to attract sellers. New Zealand Breweries were firm with sellers and dealings at 48s 9d. buvers at 48s 6d. Miscellaneous , British Tobacco relapsed to 49s 2d and 49s 3d closing quotations 49s Id buyers, 49s 5d sellers. Broken • Hill Proprietary were firmer with dealings at prices ranging from 63s 6d to 63s lOd, closing quotations 63s buyers, 63s 3d sellers—the "rights" eased to 28s lid and 28s lOd and more were offered at 28s 6d, buyers at 28s. Dunlop Rubber were firmer on buyers' offers, 22s 7d. Electrolytic Zinc advanced to 48s 9d. and 48s lid. but closed with sellers at 48s sd. G. J. Coles relapsed to 91s 3d and closed with sellers at 91s, buyers at 90s 3d. Woolworths, Sydney, ordinary were weaker with dealings at prices ranging from 29s to 28s Bd, and there were further sellers at the lowest price, buyers at 28s sd. Mining' Broken Hill South, cum dividend, eased to 38s, buyers staying in at that price, sellers at 38s sd. Mount Lyells were fractionally weaker with dealings at 35s lOd. and further sellers at 35s Bd, buyers at 35s 7d. Mount Morgans showed an easing tendency with dealings at lis 7d and lis 6d, and further sellers at the lowest price. Rawang Tin were firm at 10s 4d, and further buyers at 10s 3d failed to attract sellers.

At the wool sales 10,979 bales were offered, 8400 sold at auction, and 674 privately. The market was firm for all good wools at the closing rates of last week. Short and faulty descriptions, however, continued irregular, and were difficult to sell. Competition came mainly from the Continent and Yorkshire. Greasy merino made to 26d.

The average price of wool last week was £l6 18s 3d a'bale, or 13.3d per lb.
