Breakdown in the Wilderness

A Natal woman and her daughter had a terrifying experience recently when motoring through the Kruger National Park. The park was the subject of a special article on the feature page las? Saturday. Their car failed to negotiate a sharp bend and nose-dived into a dry river bed some 20 feet below. Fortunately none of the four occupants was seriously injured, but the front wheels and radiator were deeply embedded in the soft sand .and the car was badly damaged. The situation was made worse because darkness was setting in and numbers of lions and other dangerous animals were roaming about nearby. The nearest place offering any prospect of help was 16 miles distant; moreover, it was known that the camp outer gates are locked at 6.30 p.m., after which no access is possible. The only male member of the party nevertheless set out on foot to seek assistance, when a car which had lost its way appeared and rescued the party. •
