HOME SECRETARY VISITS BRITISH PRISON

(BRITISH OFFICIAL WIHELESS.) RUGBY, September 16. The Home Secretary (Sir Samuel Hoare), continuing his visits to the prisons, flew yesterday from Norfolk to Devonshire and inspected the Dartmoor convict prison. He found the prison comparatively empty, for the present population of Dartmoor is less than 300—one of the lowest figures on record. Thirty years ago there were 1200 prisoners there. Sir Samuel Hoare had several talks with convicts, and examined their food, work, exercise, and cells. He also inspected and addressed a parade of prison officials.
