WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

LITTLE RIVER TROPHIES AWARDED AT FLOWER SHOW The Little River Women’s Institute held a successful spring flower show in the Little River Town Hall on Thursday. Mr and Mrs L. B. Hart, Cnristchurch, judged the flower and decorative sections, Mrs H. Lee, Little River, and Mrs S. Webb, Te Oka, the produce section, and Miss Williams, Little River, and Mrs F. Coop, Kaituna, the industrial work. There were good entries in most sections. Mr F. Coop, chairman of the Wairewa County Council, who declared the show open, congratulated the institute on the high standard of exhibits in their show, and remarked on the fine display of daffodils sent by the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes. M.L.C. Mr Hart also spoke endorsing Mr Coop's reAs Mr Hart is leaving Chritchurch this will be the last time that he will be able to judge at this show. Mrs J. Milligan, president, on behalf of the institute, presented Mr Hart with a handsome tobacco jar. made of Banks Peninsula black konini, in appreciation of what he had done for the Little River Women’s Institute. Mr Hart suitably replied. The following are the trophies won:— Slower section —Pot plant in flower. Mrs A. Shadbolt; collection of flowers in bowl, Mrs Cradock; collection of polyanthus, Mrs A. Patten: collection wallflowers. Mrs A. Patten; collection of spring flowers (excluding daffodils and shrubs), Mrs H. Wilson; collection of daffodils. Mrs H. Wilson; vase of flowering shrubs. Miss Bates; collection of marigolds. Mrs B. Tait: collection of primroses. Mrs G. Jones; most points in flower section, Mrs H. Wilson. Decorative section —Bowl of flowers suitable for dinner-table. Miss A. Stanbury; small bowl of mixed flowers, Mrs McPherson; floating-bowl of flowers, Miss E. Bates; rock dish garden, Mrs S. Barclay; bowl of flowers suitable for a dinner-table. Mrs S. Macpherson; lady’s spray, Mrs L. Lewthwaite; most points in decorative section, Mrs H. Wilson: Beath and Company’s trophy. Mrs S. Macpherson. Industrial section—Dinner-waggon mats, Mrs A. Shadbolt; knitted jumper or cardigan. Miss N. Fahey; white duchesse set in colours, Mrs T. Church: article knitted by a primary school child. Miss J. Meehan; most points in industrial section. Miss J. Keenan. Produce section —Madeira cake, Mrs N. Wright: nut-loaf. Mrs C. Dutton; plate of pikelets. Miss M. Mould: mustard pickles. Miss J. Keenan: collection of pastry, Mrs J. Patterson; collection of home-made sweets, Mrs O. Stanbury. Little River Women’s Institute’s trophy for most points in produce section. Miss J. Keenan. Mrs H. Wilson and Miss J. Keenan won trophies given by Mr J. O. Coop for the most points in the show. The competitors each had 24 points. LAKE COLERIDGE A meeting of the Lake Coleridge Women’s Institute was held on Saturday. Mrs Hart presided. A “box scheme” demonstration of embroidery stitches proved very interesting. The winners of the best bloom competitions were Mesdames Hart and Lester. The hostesses were Mesdames Miller and Lester.

HORNBY-ISLINGTON The monthly meeting of the HornbyIslington Women's Institute was held in the Parish Hall, when Mrs Hepburn presided. Mrs Luke tendered her resignation as secretary, and Mrs F. Scott was appointed to act as secretary for the next six months. The balance-sheet from the birthday party showed a credit balance. Mrs Hepburn and Mrs F. Scott were appointed delegates to attend the North Canterbury Federation Conference, to be held in Christchurch on October 27. Motions of sympathy were passed to the relatives of Mrs A. Taylor and Mrs O'Flynn. Mrs Thomas and Mrs Dixon, of the St. John Ambulance, gave an excellent demonstration of first aid and the various uses of the St. John triangular bandage. The results of home competitions were as follows: —Pikelets, Mrs Hepburn 1, Mrs Wellsmore 2; crochet article, Mrs Wellsmore 1, Mrs Davis 2. ! SCARGILL-MOTUNAU [ The monthly meeting of the Scar- ! gill-Motunau Women's Institute was held recently. Mrs Bradley presided, and there was a good attendance. Miss A. Harrison gave an interesting talk on present-day conditions in China. It was decided to have an institute banner, which Mrs Bristow offered to make. Mrs W. Gibb and Mrs A. Fox were appointed as delegates to the North Canterbury Federation. Competitions resulted:—Bowl of spring flowers: Mrs Fleming 1. Rock garden in a soup plate: Mrs Milligan 1, Mrs Bradley 2, Mrs Fleming 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Parnham, F. Roberts, and Murch. SOUTHBRIDGE At the monthly meeting of the Southbridge Women's Institute, Mrs R. F. Pilkington presided. Appeals were received on behalf of tjje Christchurch Disabled Soldiers' Association and the Makogai Leper Station, and it was decided to assist in both cases. Mesdames W. Millar and J. Ballagh were appointed delegates to the halfyearly federation meeting. Miss G. M. Glanville was thanked for a talk on Edinburgh. Competitions, judged by Miss G. Jamieson (Leeston), resulted:—Best bloom, Mrs A. J. Inwood 1, Mrs Taylor 2, Miss E. Moorhead 3; oat cake, Mrs J. Williamson 1, Miss F. Greenwood 2, Mrs C. Tod 3; article made from an old felt hat, Mrs C. Tod 1. Another competition was won by Mrs F. Paterson. The hostesses were Mesdames W. G. Hill, W. C. Eggelton, J. Williamson, G. Moorhead, C. Tod, and Miss H. Thompson. I TUAHIWI The monthly meeting of the Tuahiwi I Maori Women's Institute was held in I the Tuahiwi Hall, with Mrs E. J. Corcoran presiding. Four new members were welcomed. An invitation was received to attend a meeting of institute representatives at Ohoka. Delegates to attend the half-yearly meeting in October will be appointed at the next monthly meeting. A demonstration on the making of a passe partout picture, and another on smocking were given by Mrs E. J. Corcoran.
