DOMINION DENTAL CONFERENCE
RECEPTION AND GOLF MATCH AN INTERESTING TROPHY To have a sports trophy—a handsome cup—made by an amateur who presented it lor competition amongst members of his profession is the unusual distinction of the New Zealand Dental Association, members of which have been in conference in Christchurch during this week. The trophy has an interesting history. _ It is called the Jennings Cup and it was made by Mr Clifford Jennings, a dentist of Invercargill, in 1924. and was given jointly by him and Mr G. Lawrence Taylor, of Auckland, to the New Zealand Dental Association for competition between teams of golfers representative of the North and of the South Island. The match is played on the last day of the annual conference of members of the association. This year’s match was played at the Shirley links yesterday and was won by the South Island team. After the match, the retiring president of the association. Mr J. J. Falconer, of Hastings, performing, as he raid, his last official duty, thanked Dr P Stanley Foster, vice-president, and Mr P. L. ‘Porter, acting-captain-of the Christchurch Golf Club, for the welcome th<. y had given to members of his association. The newly-elected president, Mr A. H. Boyes, of Wangamu, then presented the cup to L)r. r. A’Court, captain of the South Island team, and thanked the Christchurch Golf Club for permitting the match to be played on its links. Early in the afternoon the wives of the visitors, excepting those _ who played golf, were taken for a drive to "Otahuna” and other points of interest in and round the city. They then joined the members of the association at the Shirley links and all were entertained at tea in the club house. Among those present were Mr and Mrs A. H. Boyes. Mr J. J. Faulkner. Dr. P. FREE KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association was held on Thursday afternoon. Mrs H. T. J. Thacker presided. Others present were Mesdames A. K. Hadfleld Bishop, Rotallick. Freeman, Carlyle, Williamson, Bundy. Lester, Hamlin, Drayton, Manchester, Miss Gordon, and Miss F. L. Cooper (secretary). , The secretary reported regarding the arrangements made for the evening social to mark the Froebel centenary, to be held next week. It was reported that the Government had given a grant of £4Bl towards the building of the new kindergarten at New Brighton, but that there was still a sum of £250 to find and this the local committee is working hard to collect. The local committee was congratulated on the splendid work it had done. It was decided to accept the tender of Mr J. E. Johnson, condition on the Government approving the plan. The secretary introduced Mr R. Alston, who is organising the street day appeal on October 6. Mr Alston outlined his plans, and asked the committee's sanction of same, and this was granted. It was decided to give publicity to the fact that donations of cakes, cooked food, flowers, etc., will be acceptable, and that collectors are urgently needed. Comprehensive reports were received from Selwyn. Linwood, New Brighton. Sydenham, Sunbeam, and Richmond Kindergartens. The attendance had been somewhat affected by minor .illnesses. but it was hoped with the better weather the roll numbers would increase. Money received for the month was as follows: —Linwood £7, New Brighton quota £4 10s, furniture (parents) £4, Selwyn £lO. FLAG “500” PARTY Mrs G. Samms (Woolston) gave an afternoon card party to augment the funds of the Christchurch Women’s branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. . The prize-winners were Mesdames Colquhoun. Ellis, and Baxandall. Mrs Thurston won a competition. Those present were Mesdames Buckett, McCaw, Roberts, Watson. Parlane. McGibbon, E. Tongue, J. Millar, F. Robinson, Johflson. Foster, Baxnndall. Stokes. Ashcroft. E. Colquhoun, Macfarlane, F. Kelso. L. Tongue, Ellis, Baldwin, and Miss Robinson.
