PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON (TBOJt OU» OWX COBEESPOSDiNT.) LONDON, August 21. Dr. W. H. Entwistle, M.A., B.Sc, Ph.D. (London), who has been doing post-graduate research in education and psychology during the last seven years in London and elsewhere, is returning, via Canada and the United States of America, to Auckland, making a study of the latest developments in educational theory and practice in both Canadian and American universities and training colleges. Since 1930, Dr. Entwistle has been an official umpire at Wimbledon, and has taken part in many tournaments throughout the British Isles. __ Dr T. R. Vernon (lormerly of Palmerston North) has accepted an appointment at Massey College. For some years he has been in the research department of the United Dairies, Ltd., in London. Mr A. P. Lucas (Nelson) left by the Mongolia yesterday for Australia, on his way home after a holiday visit to the Mother Country. Mr Leo G. Bull, a former pupil of the Whangarei High School and more recently living in Brisbane, has arrived in England, and has enlisted in the Royal Air Force for a period of six years. Mr Jack Baker (Opononi), an old boy of Auckland Grammar School, has joined the Royal Air Force, and is at Henlow, Bedfordshire. Captain John H. Hawkes, retired (Gisborne), left London for New Zealand by the Remuera on August 19, after a most interesting visit to England after an absence of 37 years. He mostly visited old friends and spent the greater part of his time at Bournemouth. He was also in the south of Ireland with relatives after an absence of 60 years. He visited Cork, Killarney Lakes, Blarney Castle, and Limerick. Mr Basil Smyth (Christchurch) has taken up his residence in Hampstead. He reports that in the office of Mr David Stokes, A.R.1.8.A., where he is head. /draughtsman, everyone is extremely busy. * Mr Herbert Laban (Christchurch) has been visiting Barrow with his wife and son, meeting old friends of the days before he left the town 30 years ago. Mr'Laban will return to New Zealand early in September via Suez and Australia. Mr and Mrs F. W. Wilson (Auckland) and their three daughters have had enjoyable motoring tours in Ireland and Scotland, and they crossed again to England this week. They are in the English Lakes District, which will probably be their centre for the next few weeks, as Miss Ruth Wilson was obliged to submit to an operation for acute appendicitis at Keswick three days ago. Mr and Mrs S. A. Crichton (Wellington) are doing a world tour largely for pleasure, but Mr Crichton is also attending to business interests. Dr. and Mrs S. A. Gibbs (Nelson) have been enjoying London. To-

day they left for a trip to Austria. The itinerary includes Vienna, Budapest, and Prague. some years ago Dr. Gibbs spent a considerable time on the Continent, but Pragut will be new to him.
