MCINTOSH SHIELD SHOOTING

RANGIORA WINS MINIATURE MATCH Rangiora beat Kaiapoi by one point in the miniature rifle match in the Mcintosh Shield competition at Rangiora on Thursday evening. There were 10 men in each team, but only the eight best scores on each side were counted. Individual totals were as follows: Rangiora—S. Thompson 70, J. fa. Cook 70. R. Bowman 69, C. James 69, D W L. Mehrtens 69, W. J- Heney 69, A Judson 69, C. Butters 69; total 554 Kaiapoi—S Richards 70, R. Fendall 70, Trustrum 70, G. Stark 70, F. Richards 69, A. Munn 68, F. T. Capstick 68, J. County Rate Payments Of a total rate of £7OOO struck by the Rangiora County Council for the current year, about £2500 was paid in time to receive a discount of 5 per cent The period during which the discount was allowed ended when the councus office closed on Thursday afternoon. Primary Schools' Sports The annual athletic sports of the North Canterbury Primary Schools Sports Association will be held at Kaiapoi in November as a result or a decision made at a meeting of the association in Rangiora on Thursday. The sports are held at Rangiora and Kaiapoi in alternate years, and usually in the first term. This year's meeting was postponed from the first term because of the infantile paralysis epidemic. The president (Mr A. R. Chambers) presided at the meeting. Several changes in the programme were decided on. less popular events being deleted and new ones included. It was agreed to give no money prizes and not to charge the children either to enter events or for admission to tne Sr A U motion of thanks was passed to Mr H Hoskin (Woodend), selector of the association's representative Rugby football team. Personal Dr. and Mrs E. S. McPhail returned to Rangiora yesterday from a trip to Great Britain and the Continent. Dr. McPhail studied recent advances in medicine and surgery in a number or centres. Junior Billiards Championship As a result of having beaten R. Inwood of Oxford, by 150 points to 120 in a semi-final of the North Canterbury Amateur Billiards Associations junior championship at Oxford on Thursday evening. J. Currie, of Rangiora will meet W. Fantham (Oxford) in the final on Wednesday evening. The match will be played at Oxford, and will be 250 up. Unemployment Following is the unemployment allocation for the Rangiora district next week, this week's figures being given in parenthesis:—Sustenance, 94 <97>; No 5 scheme, 27 (26). There have been four registrations of unemployed at the Government Employment Bureau. Lawn Tennis Club A grounds committee, consisting of Messrs E. Ryde, G. H. Carpenter, and J D Appleby, was elected at a meetinc of the committee of the Rangiora Lawn Tennis Club ,on Thursday evening The president (Mr G. W Watson) presided. It was decided to buy three new nets. The club captain (Mr A S. Nash) was asked to arrange a tournament for opening day. Five resignations were accepted. HOUSING SCHEME IN LEESTON PROPOSAL DISCUSSED BY TOWN BOARD Commissioner W. Johnston presided over the monthly meeting of the Leeston Town Board. „.,*., The chairman referred to the loss sustained by the district through the death of Mr J. H. Hampton, chairman of the Southbridge Town Board, and a motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried. Sympathy was also extended to the relatives of Mr J. Leslie, one of the representatives of the is- ' trict on the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Discussion took place on the urgent need for more houses in the town district and letters on the subject from the Progress Association and Mr J. A. Lee, Parliamentary Under-Secre-tary for Housing, were read. After a full discussion of a proposal to apI ply for a Government loan at 3 per cent, interest, terms were agreed upon, and it was decided to invite applications from residents desiring to secure houses. SCHOOL COMMITTEE AT OHOKA MONTHLY MEETING HELD The monthly meeting of the Ohoka School Committee was held recently. It was reported that the school opened this term with an attendance of 53 of a roll of 54. One pupil had been readmitted. . It was decided to accept the Shirley Expression Club's offer to hold a concert for school funds early in October. There will be an exhibition of school work at the forthcoming flower show. Accounts for £2 lis lOd were passed for payment. After the meeting a presentation of a silver cake dish was made to Mrs Mayer for her services in the last five years. Mrs Mayer suitably responded. SPRINGSTON YOUNG FARMERS' CLUB Mr K, Bailey presided at the Young Farmers' Club: Final arrangements were made for the field day and ball to be held on October 7. Mr D. Ryan gave a lecture on "How to be a successful farmer."

SEFTON PUBLIC HALL SOCIETY

The third annual meeting of the Sefton Public Hall Society was held recently. Mr J. G. S. Wyllie presided. The chairman gave a report on the year's working of the society and outlined the improvements done to the hall. He also thanked the social committee for the keen interest the members showed during the year by raising more than £4O through functions held in aid of hall funds. WOMEN'S DIVISION OF FARMERS' UNION OXFORD Mrs P. K. Thompson presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Oxiord branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. The president expressed great regret in accepting Miss R. Skurr's resignation, made because of her impending departure from the district. Miss Skurr had given valuable service to the branch, not only as treasurer, but in various other ways. Mrs T. J. Smith gave a full report of the recent Dominion Conference held in Wellington, to which she was a delegate. Mr H. C. D. A collection of gifts was made for the leper Christmas fund. A report of the girls' educational week was presented by the delegates— Misses E. Thorne and B. Chambers. YALDHURST BRANCH The September meeting of the Yaldhurst branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held at the home of Mrs E. Spence, with Mrs T. Chappell presiding. An account of the country girls educational course, held in Christchurch recently, was given by Miss Vena McKenzie and Miss Iris Crawford. During the afternoon songs - were sung by Miss Thelma Lehrs, and amusing competitions were won by Mrs J. Foley and Mrs C. D. Doyle. The home competitions, which were judged by Mrs Doyle and Miss Lehrs, were won as follows: —Article to cost not more than one shilling: Miss V. McKenzie 1, Mrs Inch and Miss Iris Crawford (equal) 2. WEST MELTON A well-attended meeting was held in the West Melton Hall on Monday evening, when a large number of members of the Farmers' Union, and of women of the district were present. An address was given by Mrs H. A. Nutt, Motukarara, the Dominion vicepresident of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, who spoke of the aims and objects of the women's divisions, and gave details of its philanthropic work. It was unanimously decided to form a branch at West Melton, and the election of officers resulted as follows:—President. Mrs R. S. Roper (Halkett); secretary. Mrs A. Stewart; vice-presidents, Mrs J. D. Henderson and Mrs J. H. Harvey. The election of other members of. the committee was held over. A vote of thanks was given Mrs Nutt for hex address.

WOODEND-WAIKUKU The Woodend-Waikuku branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, at its September meeting, passed resolutions of sympathy with Mrs A. Amor and Mrs F. McQuillan. On behalf of Mrs E. Eder, a member who has left the district, Mrs F. Moore received from Mrs Robinson a present from the branch, with best wishes and regret at her departure. Competition results were as follows: Best blooms: Mrs F. Cassidy 1, Mrs G. McQuillan 2. Wool mats: Mrs J. Ballinger 1, Mrs F. McQuillan 2. Plum puddings: Miss Moody 1, Mrs C. M_orriss 2. RICCARTON BRANCH Mrs Ambridge presided at the monthly meeting of the Riccarton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, at which two new members were welcomed. Mrs Ambridge gave a bowl, made of New Zealand wood, to be competed for in a flower and miscellaneous competition, to be held monthly. Mrs Eva M. Seward, of London, gave an interesting talk on Fairbridge Farm Schools. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Pemberthy and the Misses Bowen and Seymour.
