TRIALS OP EXPLORATION PARTY \ / SYDNEY, September 17. A tale of a terrible journey of 400 wiles from the interior of Papua to Ih© coast with a companion seriously «1 has reached Sydney. Mr Jack Hides and Mr David Lyell were leading an exploring expedition in Papua when Lyell fell ul. Hides decided to dash for the coast down the Fly river, and he had Practically to carry Lyell for a considerable distance. The party was attacked by beriberi, and five natives died. Twentytwo others who were suffering from the disease were helpless, so Hides took the risk of rafting the party through the gorge. The party ran into a tidal bore, lost their canoe end everything in it, and almost lost their lives. The remainder of the journey was made under terrible conditions. Lyell is in a serious condition.
