THE CANDY FAIR

CHAPTER V Chocolate Drops Poor old Sweet Tooth looked at the king, and the king looked at Sweet Tooth. What was to be done? Here was new candy, perfectly new candy, the only new candy at the fair and no one knew what it was. “I i” began Sweet Tooth. “It looks good,” remarked the king, tasting, just nibbling a tiny weeny bit of one of the brown balls. , “It’s stunner,” said Princess Arabella, who never would talk like a lady, let alone a princess. It was most distressing. . “Don’t—don’t—” began the king, but he could not complete the sentence. He was occupied with the brown balls. . ... “It looks good,” said the thin soldier, nibbling just a tiny bit, and keeping his left eye on the king, who had taken a third helping "It IS good,” remarked the fat soldier, nibbling a big bit, and not caring about the king or anyone else. He liked those brown balls And then the queen, and the other princesses came along, and

they tried the brown balls, too. The court strolled to the stall, and the prime minister, and the lord chamberlain helped themselves to one apiece. Soon it appeared that there wouldn't be a brown ball left. And there was only one when next the king, in an absent-minded way put out his hand to take another He drew it back, with a dreadfully stern, kingly expression. "Stop!" cried the king. 'Soon there will be no clue by which we can trace the maker of these new candies. Who —" And, at that very moment up came Adolphus. He was puffing, and he was blowing, and his face was very red with running. He didn't notice the king or the princesses or the queen or the fat and thin soldiers. "Master! Master! Someone has stolen our candies, our new candies that I made for the fair," he cried. Then his eye fell on the one little brown ball left. "That is it! But there is only one now." And he burst into sticky tears. "Ha! That was the king, in a burst of merriment. "So it was you, young man, who made these new candies. You win the bag of gold, and the new sign for your shop." "What do you call these new candies?" asked the queen, absentmindedly, putting out her hand to take the last. But the thin soldier frowned so terrifyingly that she drew it back."

By FRANCES R. STERRETT

“I —I don’t know," stammered Adolphus. Old Sweet Tooth, my kind master, made the white candy, and then I just dropped it into the melted chocolate, and—- “ Chocolate drops!” cried Princess Arabella, securing the last by a turn of strategy. And there you are! Sweet Tooth and Adolphus won the bag of gold, and were able to hang up the sign “Candy Makers to His Majesty," over their shop, which was a very high honour. And Augustus went to live with them. And everyone was happy, including the little princesses, who called at the shop three times a week for chocolate drops. 'l-SAwyt-MOUNT GREY Mount Grey is so white, And yet so bright, I wish I could go To climb it, you know. —THERESA TAYLOR, A. 8., “The Vicarage,” Amberley,
