A MOTHER MEANDERS
Extract From a Letter to Her Daughter
Italy "We arc now passing along the south of Italy. It is a most beautiful eountrv. In the background arc high dark mountains, then lower hills, and nearer the sea sloping vineyards and olive groves, and houses all along the sea front, and up the hillsides. There are chalk ciifTs in places, where the volcanoes h-jve bun !uiii; ago. and deep chasms in the hills. Every new and ui>uin can be seen riveis coin-
ins down to the sea. The Mediterranean is a heavenly blue. This seems to be the most interesting part of the trip so far. One night we spent on deck until late, passing along the coast of Italy. We saw the volcano. Stromboli, in action. It wns most beautiful and wonderful. The smoke and llames Hew out of \hf summit, and then the lava seemed to come down into the sea. "Yesterday morning started very e::citing!v. as a large troopship sailed into the harbour with thousands of Italians back from the war. TII2 scenes on shore were
unforgettablc. The women and children were wringing their hands and crying with excitement. All the ships in the harbour sent up their flags, and, altogether, the people went a bit mad. It was most exciting, but very pitiful when they brought the invalids off. London 'I went through Westminster Abbey, and over the ground on which Royalty trod at the Coronation. All" the tapestries and everything were still hanging. The whole place was decorated in blue and gold- -the Queen's colours. The crown jewels were on display. They were wonderful. 1 also saw Cleopatra's Needle, the Horse Guards' parade, Hyde Park, and
No. 10 Downing Street. Here I flood on a step, and was hurried off by a policeman."' (Illustrations by the daughter.)
