FRIDAY (Before Mt E. C. Levvey, S.Mp REMANDED * On a charge of obtaining the sum of £3 12s 6d from Mary Pilling, at Christchurch, on September 3, by means of a false pretence, Harry Walter Reid was remanded to appear on September 23. Bail was allowed. INDECENT ASSAULT Arthur Gladstone Polkinghorne (Dr. A. L. Haslam), who pleaded not guilty to a charge of indecent assault on a male/was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was renewed, a condition being that accused report daily to the police. ADMITTED TO PROBATION A young man who appeared for sentence on two charges of converting motor-cars was admitted to two years' probation on the first charge, and convicted and discharged on the second. An order was made for the suppression of the name, and a special term was added to the probation order prohibiting the youth from handling a motorvehicle during that period. TRAFFIC CASES Offenders against the traffic regulations were dealt with as follows (payment of costs being ordered in each case unless otherwise stated): — Driving motor-vehicle without required lights—Albert Ernest Lyttlo, 10s: Frank Alexander Briden. 10s: William Garden. 10s: Randal Matthews H. Careless Driving—James Alexander Pepper, 20s: James Robert Williams, 10s: Norris Edmund Darney, 20s. Crossing railway' line when not clear—Harold James Kernahan, 10s: George William Boleyn. 20s. No driver's licence—Samuel Aspley Durose. 7s 6d. Failure to give wav to traffic on the right—William Charles McCaskell. 20s. LABOUR CASES (Before Mr F. F. Reid. S.M.) The following cases in which the Department of Labour 'Mr R. T. Bailey) took proceedings were heard: Henry Crust, licensee of the New City Hotel (Mr C. S. Thomas'. was ordered to pay a penalty of £1 for employing a barman who was not a member of a union. A penaltv of £1 was imposed on Alena Elizabeth Lord, a grocer. for failing to close her shop at the required time on a Saturday. David Rodgers. licensee of the Islington Hotel (Mr C. S. Thomas, was ordered to pay a penalty of £1 10s 1 for a breach of the hotel workers agreement in failing to pay overtime to an employee. Leslie Muschamp was ordered to pay a penaltv of £1 for accepting a lower rate of wages than that prescribed by the hotel employees" agreement. The department was non-suited or. a charge brought against Marldon. Ltd restauranteurs (Mr J. T. iVatts).. of taking proceedings with the intention of defeating the provisions of a clause of the New Zealand tearoom and restaurant employees' award. A penalty of £2 was imposed on a further charge of employing D. Manson and others as i waitresses and failing to supply them I with substantial meals each working ! day and failing to allow such workers J one shilling in lieu of each substantial meal not supplied.
