N.Z. PARTICIPATION IN WAR
REMARK ATTRIBUTED TO HIGH COMMISSIONER [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 17. A remark alleged to have been made by the High Commissioner for New Zealand (Mr W. J. Jordan) before his departure from the Dominion was quoted by Mr W. P. Endean (National, Parnell) when discussing national defence during the Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives to-day. "Just as the steamer was drawing out from the wharf at Auckland, Mr Jordan shouted to the crowd below: 'lf I have my way, I will see that neither a man nor a ship leaves New Zealand in the event of war.' Then after his arrival at Geneva he cries out for the enforcement of sanctions," said Mr Endean. The Prime Minister (the Rt. lim. M. J. Savage): Who said that? Mr Endean: The High Commissioner for New Zealand. The Prime Minister: I deny it absolutely. Mr Endean: I have seen it in print. I know people who heard the statement made oh the wharf at Auckland. Mr Jordan goes off to Geneva and has his little speech corrected by Mr Eden.
