AN ANSWER OFFERED

Mr Bndean on Socialism GOVERNMENT REFERRED TO STALIN ! From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 17. "We on the Opposition benches have been asked to define what we mean by Socialism. Well, I would refer the Government to Stalin, a gentleman who lives in Russia and who says that Socialism and Communism are the same thing. That is what I say, too, and before many moons have gone by the people of. New Zealand will have that deiinition sunk deep into their minds," declared Mr W. P. Endean (National. Parnell), during the Ad-riress-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Endean said that the Government had claimed that small farmers wanted Socialism, but if that member would pay a visit to Waikato he would soon discover that farmers were not only opposed to the Government but wore distinctly hostile to it. "I was up there recently, and I know what I am talking about," said Mr Endean. Discussing Ministerial trips abroad, Mr Endean said that the Prime Minister went to London and told the world that the only solution of its difficulties was to increase purchasing power. The Prime Minister (the Rt, Hon. M. J. Savage): Hear, hear. Mr Endean: Why, the Italians, Japanese, and Germans simply laughed at the statement, and after meeting some of the leading men—statesmen, bankers, and businessmen —the Prime Minister turned round and said, "We have learnt nothing in the Old Country." Then we have the Minister for Finance, He went away on some peculiar mission. He went like a Napoleon of finance to Moscow, and came back in a great retreat from Moscow.
