A MOTHER TO MOTHERS Mrs Violet Kelway Libby, herself the mother of three children, has, in her simply written, practical book, "How to Care for the Baby," given much information that will be welcome to the young mother, anxious to do her best for her first baby. The book deals with the many small problems that arise in the life of a baby, matters seemingly too trivial to discuss with doctor or nurse, but important to the well-being of the child. There are chapters giving helpful advice about baby on his "off" days, hints on sun bathing and exercise, on the care of baby when travelling, and much information that should give confidence and serenity to young mothers. "How to Care for the Baby," which is edited by Mr Len Chaloner and published by Messrs George Allen and Unwin, Ltd., has an attractive appearance, with its pastel pink dust cover banded with blue. KIRWEE SOCIAL EVENING A flag bridge and euchre evening was held in the Kirwee Hail recently, in aid of the Courtenay Church building fund. Prizes tor the euchre were won by Mrs R. Watson 1, Miss P. Roper 2. Mr McPherson 1, Mr Bevan Begg 2. The winners of the bridge prizes were Mrs W. L. Stott, Mr and Mrs A. Stewart. Two cakes made by Miss L. Watson were won by Mrs W. L. Stott and Mrs L. Morrison (Darfield). During an interval the Rev. W. H. S. Hine thanked all who had assisted in making the evening a success, and extended a cordial invitation to all to attend the dedication service on Sunday. A dance followed. The Halswell branch of the Red Cross Society held the last monthly meeting of the year, Mrs Silvester (president) presiding over a good attendance of members. Several children's garments that had been made since the last meeting were handed in and packed ready to send to the central depot in Christchurch. A vote of thanks was passed to all who had helped with subscriptions to buy material for garments that had been sent to the depot this year.
