INCIDENCE OF ANIMAL DISEASES
GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL TO INVESTIGATE (PBE3B ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, June 5. An official investigation into the incidence of animal diseases, and a survey of trade prospects with the Dutch East Indies, will be carried out by Mr W. C. Barry, Director of the Live Stock Division of the Department of Agriculture, who will leave Wellington next week for Java. The Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin), in making the announcement, said that some apprehension had been felt about the introduction into New Zealand of serious stock diseases, such as foot-and-mouth disease, in imported maize and other stock foods. Imports of maize were prohibited from the Dutch East Indies, with the result that representatives of the new shipping service and importers in New Zealand had expressed dissatisfaction with the step taken. In addition to inquiring into animal diseases, Mr Barry will investigate the possibilities of establishing trade from New Zealand to the Dutch East Indies, particularly in the export of stud or dairy stocky
