KING GEORGE V MEMORIAL

£6988 COLLECTED TO DATE OFFICIAL CLOSE OF APPEAL Christchurch will make a substantial contribution to the King George V National Memorial Fund. The appeal ended officially yesterday, and when the City Council offices closed yesterday the City Treasurer (Mr J. w. Niven) had acknowledged contributions totalling £6988 Os 3d. To this sum there will, it is expected, be many additions during the next few days, for all the money raised by the community singing yesterday has not yet been received and there are about 1000 contribution .lists to be returned by firms in the v city. All the grants made by local bodies, also, have not yet been sent to the City Treasurer, and those closely connected with the organisation of the appeal believe that the city's total will reach £BOOO. Several large sums were acknowledged yesterday, among them being £IOOO from the Christchurch City Council, £9OO from the Lyttelton Harbour Board, £7OO from the street appeal, £77 2s lid from the community singing, and £SO from the Canterbury Rugby Union. The community singing will bring in more than £77, however, for many promises of contributions were received by telephone and tnese, it is estimated, amo unt to £37, bringing the total from the fixture to £ll4. This will make the fixture one of the most successful to have been held in Christchurch. There was a Jarge attendance at the Civic Theatre. The singing was conducted by Mr A. W. Brown, the pianist being Mr F. L. Squire. Goods given to assist the appeal were auctioned by Mr Allan Matson. N.Z. FUND MAY EXCEED £50,000 FLAG-PLANTING CEREMONY AT WELLINGTON (PEESS ASSOCIATION TELECBAM.) WELLINGTON, June 3.. "Both the Wellington and national objectives will have been achieved when the first accounting is announced later in the week," said the Hon. P. Fraser, Acting-Prime Minister, when opening the flag-planting ceremony in the city this morning as part of the King George V Memorial Fund campaign. The amount decided on for the whole of New Zealand was £IOO,OOO. First of all there was £25,000 from the Government, and when the £25,000 had been raised by voluntary subscriptions a further pound for pound subsidy was to be given right up to £IOO,OOO, he said. Tnat was the limit set, but it looked as if it would be surpassed. The understanding now was that every £IOOO over £50,000 to any amount would be subsidised by a pound for pound, and that amount was well in sight. He would probably be able to announce on Friday that £50,000 had been reached, but those who wished to give did not need to hesitate, for every shilling, whether given to-day or afterwards, would be subsidised. A crowd of more than 500 attended the ceremony. When Mr Fraser, the Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. Hisiop), and other prominent citizens arrived, the crowd increased rapidly. After addressing those present, Mr Fraser and Mr Hisiop went up to a plot where a space for the planting of flags had been marked out and placed the first and second flags. They were followed by Mrs Fraser, the Hon W. Perry, M.L.C., Mr R. *A. Wright M.P., many prominent citizens, and hundreds of persons who had been waiting. Before many minutes hundreds of flags had been planted. The planting continued rapidly, and at intervals representatives of the secondary schools of Wellington placed the flags purchased by college pupils. A procession of vehicles from 1870 to 1937 was also held. The display of modern cars was outstanding. Another feature was the contribution by the Defence Department of an antiaircraft unit led by a huge motoT transport, which drew a three-inch anti-aircraft gun mounted on a truck and an aircraft searchlight outfit.
