DISPOSAL OF REFUSE
PROTEST BY SPREYDON RESIDENTS COMMENT ON MAYOR'S CRITICISM "The only way to silence criticism of the City Council's proposals to establish a scheme for disposing of refuse by tipping it in dumps is to give reasonable answers to the points raised, and I am determined to do this, even if I have to call a public meeting in Spreydon myself." This comment was made yesterday by the Mayor (Mr J. W. Beanland), on a statement by the president of the Spreydon Burgesses' Association (Mr L. Hollings) that the association did not wish to hear "further propaganda from the council" at a meeting it has called of Spreydon residents to discuss plans for combating the council's scheme. The Mayor recently announced that the City Engineer (Mr A. R. Galbraith) and Cr. J. S. Barnett) would attend this meeting, but in a letter to the Editor of "The Press" yesterday Mr Hollings indicated that the meeting would not wish to hear the views of the council. Yesterday the Mayor said that the idea of sending representatives to the meeting was to answer criticism, but although Mr Hollings wanted a fight, it seemed that he did not want anyone to light with. Mr Beanland added that the introduction of controlled tipping in Spreydon might cause some little inconvenience to residents, but after three or four years the district would have a park where to-day there was only an unsightly and objectionable hole used as a dump by all sorts of people. It was intended to surround the site of .the dump with a 10-foot galvanised iron fence, and the gates to the dump would be locked at night. If this were done, there would be nothing objectionable in the scheme.
