ROSS PLAYERS DECLARED INELIGIBLE WEST COAST MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS An objection to the Nolan brothers playing for Ross was received by the management committee of the West Coast Rugby Union at its weekly meeting on Tuesday, from the South Westland Sub-Union. Mr J. Guy was in the chair. . , , , The sub-union said that because of the Nolan brothers’ action the United Club (Wataroa) had defaulted twice, as it could not field a team without the Nolans. Saturday v/as the day on which they played their competition matches. James Nolan advised that the United Club had withdrawn from the competition this season. The subject was considered in committee. and it was decided that considering the notification received from the South Westland Sub-Union, the Ross Club and the South Westland SubUnion should be advised that the Nolans were not eligible to play for Ross, further, that the selectors in the Westland Sub-Union be advised that John Nolan was now not eligible for selection in the Hokitika representative team. The Westland Sub-Union advised that it agreed to the match on Saturday between Greymouth and Hokitika. The Sub-Union suggested that Greymouth play at Hokitika before the Buller-West Coast match. It was agreed that instructions should be issued to referees to inspect sprigs in football boots each Saturday. Matches Refused Applications for matches at Greymouth on June 9 were received from the Sydenham Club for a junior grade and a boys’ team under nine stone and High School Old Boys, for a third grade team. It was decided to advise the clubs that the matches could not be arranged. The chairman, secretary, and Messrs F. W. Baillie. and M. Jamieson were appointed a fixtures and grounds committee. At the suggestion of Mr T. P. Ryan it was decided to recommend to the fixtures and grounds committee that two senior games be played on the No. 1 ground at Rugby Park, where practicable. It was agreed to comply with the request of the Buller Rugby Union for a change of the dates of-the BullerWest Coast home-and-home matches from June 19 to June 16, and from July 3 to July 10. The Buller Union said that Canterbury would play Buller at Westport on June 12, and that it was deemed inadvisable to play two senior representative matches on successive Saturdays. Prices for admission to the Canter-bury-West Coast match on Wednesday next were fixed at 2s, Is, and enclosure 6d. Saturday’s Games The following fixtures were arranged for Saturday:— Senior grade—Greymouth representatives v. Hokitika, at Rugby Park, at 3 p.m. (Mr N. Eggleton). Third grade—Star v. Cobden, Rugby Park No. 1. 1.30 p.m. (Mr C. H. Hoskin); Celtic v. United, at Rugby Park No. 2. 1.30 (Mr R. Bunt); Blaketown v. Technical, at Recreation Ground, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr D. Jarvis). On Wednesday the following fixtures will be played;— Canterbury v. West Coast, at Rugby Park. 2.45 p.m. (umpires, Messrs Reynolds and McKay). Junior grade—Te Kinga v. Celtic, Rugby Park, 1.15 p.m. (Mr R. Bunt); Blaketown v. Kumara. at Recreation Ground. 1 p.m. (Mr D. Jarvis); Cobden v. Star, at Cobden. 10.30 a.m. (Mr W. Rapley).

RUGBY LEAGUE NOMINATION OF SOUTH ISLAND SELECTOR Mr L. Hunter was nominated for the position of South Island selector at a meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Rugby League on Tuesday night. Mr A. H. McKane presided. Approval was given to the action of the emergency committee in granting the applications of the Marist Club for the transfer of L. Stewart, Pearson, D. Mulqueen, and S. Mulqueen from Pirates Club, and the reclassification of D. and S. Mulqueen from senior to junior grade. The Inangahua Rugby League SubCentre wrote further about the excursion it was running to Christchurch on June 18. It was decided to leave the matter over for a week, so that the opinion of clubs could be obtained., The Referees’ Association asked if the centre would approve of a meeting on the evening of the next representative match. The letter was received. The association advised that it had not been notified of the schoolboys’ games, last Saturday. The chairman said that there had been a shortage of referees, but this had been because the association had not been notified. The following fixtures were arranged for next Sunday:— Senior Grade—Blackball v. Ngahere, at Blackball, at 2.30 p.m. (Mr L. Kinsella); Runanga v. Nelson Creek, at Nelson Creek, at 2.30 p.m. (Mr M. O’Brien); Marist a bye. Junior Grade—Kumara v. Runanga, at Kumara, at 2.30 p.m. (Mr A. Fielding); Marist v. Brunner, at Wingham Park, at 2.30 p.m. (Mr S. Smith); Blackball v. Rapahoe. at Rapahoe, at 2.30 p.m. (Mr M. Hall). Third Grade —Marist v. Runanga, at Wingham Park, at 1.15 p.m. (Mr J. Mathews); Blackball a bye. Fourth Grade—Marist v. WESTPORT MAGISTRATE'S COURT FIRST CASE UNDER NEW TRAFFIC REGULATIONS ' __ The first informations laid in Westport under the new traffic regulations were heard in the Magistrate’s Court at Westport yesterday before Mr Raymond Femer, S.M., when John William Naylor was charged: (1) with riding a cycle at night without having properly affixed thereto a light of sufficient brilliance to be visible for at least 300 feet under normal atmospheric conditions; (2) with riding a bicycle in Russell street, such bicycle not being equipped with a red rear reflector and placed perpendicularly at the back of the bicycle, so as to reflect to the rear a light shining towards it from rearwards of the bicycle; (3) with riding a bicycle not displaying to the rear a white surface of at least 12 square inches, and maintained in a clean condition at a place where such surface is not likely to be obscured from the rear by the driver or his clothes. Sergeant C. J. King said that this prosecution was the first brought in Westport under the new traffic regulations as a warning, because there were' still a great mqny people who did not appear to be aware that they were obliged to have red rear reflectors and white rear mudguards on their bicycles. . . The Magistrate said he desired to impress upon citizens the necessity of making themselves familiar with the traffic regulations. They affected not only drivers of cars and cyclists, but pedestrians. However, this prosecution had been brought as a warning, and the defendant would be sufficiently punished if he was convicted and ordered to pay the costs on the three informations. Naylor was convicted, and ordered to pay the costs, 10s, on each charge He was allowed one week to pay. For riding a cycle at night without a light Herbert Samuels was fined 10s. On' a charge of procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, William James Ryan was fined £1- . , Alexander Shaw was convicted and fined £9 8s on a charge of wilful obscene exposure at North Beach on May 13. SUPREME COURT SITTING AT WESTPORT The quarterly session of the Supreme Court at Westport is set down for to-day. but it is understood that the Court will be further adjourned until Monday. . „ . The list of business is a light one, and there are no criminal cases.

WESTPORT CUSTOMS RETURNS INCREASE IN IMPORTANT ITEMS Increases in customs duty and in sales tax collected at Westport are shown in the returns for May for the five months ended May 31, compared with the corresponding periods of last year. NEW BOWLING CLUB FORMED DECISION OF GREYMOUTH MEETING The formation of a bowling club at Karoro is to be proceeded with, according to a decision made at a representative meeting of bowlers held in the Greymouth Club’s pavilion on Momday night. Mr J. Sharp, centre president, presided. Mr J. M. Bunt, one of the conveners of the meeting said that at the outset he wished to deny that the proposal to form a new club was in any way antagonistic to the Greymouth Club. The conveners of the meeting had met the sub-committee set up by the Hospital Board, and certain proposals about an area of ground and other matters had been agreed to. These proposals were subject to the approval of the Hospital Board. The following motion was carried unanimously:—“ That this meeting heartily approves of the proposal to form a new bowling club in Greymouth, and also approves of the proposed site of the new green, provided that it can be made available on the terms and conditions outlined by the conveners of the meeting.” The conveners of the meeting, together with Messrs Thompson, McKenzie, G. Patterson, and J. Kyle, were appointed a sub-committee to proceed with the formation of the new club, and to call a general meeting at a later date. It was reported that between 30 and 40 bowlers and intending bowlers had joined the club.
