MODERATE BUSINESS BREWERY SHARES ACTIVE Brewery shares commanded lively interest on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday. New Zealands rose sharply, but later eased, as did Staples. Turnover was fair, mostly in industrials.

Goldsbrough, Morts changed hands at 37s 10d, 37s 9d and 37s Bd, and more were wanted at the lowest price, sellers at 37s 9d. Kaiapoi Woollens, preference shares, were firm, with sellers and business at 17s. Westport-Stockton Coal remained unaltered at 2s 9d, market closing Id either way. Auckland Gas were fractionally firmer at 225. Christchurch Gas were easier at 26s 9d. New Zealand Breweries, cum dividend ana rights to one new share for every two held, rose sharply to 6Bs, but weie unable to maintain that level, and dealings followed at prices ranging from 67s to 64s 9d, with further buyers at the lowest price, sellers at 64s lid. The "rights" were available at 25s 9d. Staples Brewery rose to 55s 6d on the morning call, but on the afternoon call fell back to 53s 6d. Miscellaneous Broken Hill Proprietary were weaker with sellers and business at 80s 9d—the contributing were firm at 74s lOd, market closing Id either way. Dunlop Rubber rose to 22s Bd, buyers staying in at that figure, sellers at 22s 9d Electrolytic Zinc, ordinary, eased from 56s 9d to 56s 3d—the preference showed little variation at 57s and 57s 3d G J. Coles were easier at £5 10s to'£s 9s 6d, sellers staying in at the lowest price, buyers at £5 9s 3d. Hume Pipe (Australia) were fractionally weaker at 19s 3d. An odd parcel of New Zealand Drug Company changed hands at 745. Shillings, Ltd. declined to 18s 9d, market closing 3d either way. Taranaki Oilfields moved up to 4s Id, but closed weaker, with sellers at 3s 9d, buyers at 3s Bd. Mining Martha declined to 15s Id. Broken Hill South were easier, with sellers at 50s. Mount Lyell eased from 45s to 44s 5<L market closing 44s 4d buyers, 44s 6d sellers. Mount Morgans relapsed to 13s 7Jd and 13s 4d, and more were offered at the lower price, buyers at 13s 3d. RUSSIAN GOLD DUMPED ON MARKET VIGOROUS ACTION AVERTS BREAK IN PRICE LONDON, May 31. A long list of falls marked the close of a dull day on the Stock Exchange, which was perturbed by the Spanish situation and even more upset by gold uncertainties. Vigorous intervention by the authorities alone averted a heavy break in the price of gold, as £1,700,000 worth from Russia was flung on the market on May 29, and a further large quantity was offered to-day. Gold Is quoted at £? 0s 6£d a fine ounce, almost unchanged from last week. BRITISH WAR LOAN STOCK i LONDON, May 31. British War Loan 3J per cent, stock is quoted at £lOl 12s 6d. PRICE OP SILVER LONDON, May 31. Silver is quoted at 20|d a fine ounce spot, and 20 S-16d forward.
