ASHLEY RIVER BRIDGE

Construction Almost Finished BIG STEAM GRAB TO BE USED ft The construction of the new road bridge over the Ashley river is almost completed and traffic on the Main North road will be able to u"se the new link by the end of August. Little remains to be done to the bridge itself, and work on the construction of the approach ramps has already been begun. The new bridge, which is being constructed by the Rope Construction Company, of Auckland, is 1190 feet in length, four times as long as the structure which was damaged in the major flood of February last year, and which will be dismantled when the I new structure is open to traffic. In i 'all, 200 piles were driven for the new , ! bridge. It is the most expensive bridgei building work under the control of the Public Works Department for five years. The tender of Ryan Bros, has been accepted for the construction of the approaches, which involve the dumping of about 11,000 yards of material. Most of this is being drawn from the bed of the river, and the rate of progress will be greatly increased when the contractor puts into use the large steam grab which he proposes to employ. _______________
