LEVEL CROSSING TO GO
Overhead Bridge At Prebbleton TENDERS TO BE CALLED SOON Tenders will soon be called by the Public Works Department for the construction of an at the Prebbleton railway crossing In thl louthbridge line. The plans have been drawn, approved in Wellington and returned to cnrisi church; and after the specifications have been prepared and approved Sers willVcalled. The approximate cost of the work is not yet Lwn, but it will be much less than the cost of the Styx overbridge, -s it is less than half the length. The structure will be of reinforced concrete, with six spans, four of »u feet each and two of 30 feet each. The piers will not be identical, however, for the road and the railway meet at a very acute angle, and the railway will actually pass through the centre pier as through a very small tunnel. The Styx crossing is almost at right angles and contains 14 spans of an aggregate length at At G fts highest point the bridge will be 16ft 6in from the railway. The bridge will be slightly different from others of the type because it is necessary to employ the cantilever principle on two of the piers. At either end of the concrete bridge will be a ramp about five chains long. The construction of a temporary road has already been begun on the western side of the site of the proposed bridge. The elimination of the Sockburn crossing has not yet progressed past the stage of the preparation of plans, but it is hoped that these will be completed very soon.
