POULTRY KEEPING FOR PROFIT

BREEDING COCKERELS [By "LEGHORN."] ' That a good male bird is of the utmost importance to all poultry farmers who produce their own hatching eggs is now an accepted fact. The large proportion of well-known speciality breeders producing pedigree male birds is good evidence of how the present-day poultryman values a good pedigree male to head his best pen of females. This is the time of the year to buy a good cockerel if one is needed for the best breeding pen. The longer one waits to purchase male birds the poorer will be the chances for selection. It is only natural for people visiting any stud farm to take the best male birds available as thei? first choice. It is also a common thing for those speciality breeders to send out the very best stock they can in filling their p.arly orders. This means that all the male birds that leave a farm are always the best available. For quite a while this does not affect the purchasing of males very much, because most breeding farms have many males of equal worth. As long as these last, ono me.le is as good as another. A little later on in the season, however especially during the late winter, when breeding work is right at hand, it is then hard to find the same quality of males that one would have found had one purchased earlier in the season. Poultry Show The annua! poultry show arranged by the Christchurch Poultry Club will bo held in Christchurch this week. This show is the largest held in the Dominion, and it affords an opportunity for poultry keepers to sec birds of correct type. In the utility classes, in particular, can considerable knowledge be gained which, if used, will help a great deal to improve the average flock.
