YESTERDAY'S PROGRAMME FINALS DECIDED LAST EVENING Further finals were decided in the Christchurch Competitions Society's twenty-seventh annual festival at the Civic Theatre last evening. The official accompanist is Miss Agnes Shearsby. „ ' English Song, Men—C. D. Sealey (Akaroa), 82 points. 1; Noel Burtt (Spreydon), 80 points, 2; P. Isherwood (Glenroy), 79 points, 3. Piano Solo, Man or Woman, own selection—Douglas Zander (Lyttelton). "Toccata" (Ravel). 76 points, 1; Miss Joan Owens (Christchurch), First Movement of Sonata, Op. 35 (Chopin), 75 points. 2; Miss Zita Munson (Runanga), "Ballade" (Chopin), 73 points. 3. , Violin Solo, any age—Clifton Cook (Riccarton), 95 points, 3; Theodore Staples (Ashburton), "Thais," 82 points. 2; Miss Marie O'Neil (Christchurch), "Reverie," v hj c; Miss Claire Simpson (Christchurch), hj c Dickens Humorous Sketch—"We, Us, and Company" ("David's Dinner"), 100 points, 1; Miss Lucy Cowan's School, "The Beadle's Courtship," 89 points, 2. The judge said that many of the competitors had failed through not living their parts. Though they spoke their lines well and clearly, they were not convincing. Women over 21 years—Miss Daisy Perry (Christchurch). The judge praised the winner highly, saying that she had shown consistent quality both in the tests and in her own selection.
