ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION
SCHOOL DIVISION OPENED AT NEW BRIGHTON An interesting gathering was heM at the New Brighton Roman Catholic School yesterday afternoon, when the official opening of the St. Raphael Ambulance Cadet and Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Association was held. Among those present were the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. L. Smith) and the following representatives of the St. John Ambulance AssociationsMajor J. Crampton (Assistant-Commis-sioner), Major G. Peak (Cadet Superintendent), Scrgeant-Major T. F. S. Rudd (Senior District Superintendent), Mrs A. M. L. Bishop (Woman District Superintendent), Mrs A. E. Fricker 'Woman Corps Superintendent), Nurse R. Ferguson (Woman Corps Officer). , The Rev. Father O'Regan presided, and for the church, sisters, and children, extended a welcome to the Mayor and representatives of the St. John Ambulance Association. Mr Smith said that the children were fortunate in having the opportunity of learning first-aid. "This is an important eypnt in the history of the St. John Ambulance Association," said Mr Smith, "as the New Brighton Catholic School has the honour of being the first school in the Dominion to form an ambulance and nursing division." It reflected great credit on Nurse Ferguson, who had taken the work up so wholeheartedly. Major Peak congratulated the boys and girls on their decision to start in the first-aid work, and wished them every success.

Frost wished Mr and Mrs Carter every success in their married life, and asked them to accept the gifts. Mr Carter suitably responded. \ Monte Carlo dance was won by Mrs j E. Holland and partner. Mr V. Lang (Belfast) supplied the dance music and Messrs S. Mcllwrick and H, Giles acted as masters of ceremonies. KAIKOURA LABOUR PARTY The Kaikoura branch of the New Zealand Labour Party held its monthly meeting with Mr D. Manson (president) presiding. Four new members were elected. It was decided to grant £1 Is to the King George V National Memorial Fund. Personal Mr D. Manson, who has been in charge of the Mangamaunu School for several years, has received notice of his transfer to Kirwee. RAINFALL AT SOUTHBRIDGE For May the rainfall, as recorded by Mr A. J. Inwood's gauge, was 2.44 inches, compared with 1.10 inches for May of last year. The total for the five months ended May 31 was 12.18 inches, and for the corresponding period of last year the figures were 22.27 inches. There were 11 frosts last month, the hardest being 7 degrees.
