KOWAI COUNTY COUNCIL
The meeting of the Kowai County Council was held recently. There were [present—Mr R. Peach (chairman). Crs. 'h. May, D. McLean, J. Ashworth, E. A. Payne, J. B. Bowker, and M. B. Forrester. The financial statement showed that since last meeting £1632 10s Id had been collected, mostly in rates. Accounts for payment totalled £637 10s 3d, and the credit balance at the bank was £348 0s 2d. It was decided to give £1 Is towards the Sefton Plunket Society and £3 3s toward St. John Ambulance invalid 'transport service. The Counties' Association wrote requesting the council's views on amalgamation. It was unanimously decided not to favour amalgamation of any counties. The District Engineer of New Zealand Railways wrote about road and level crossings at Balcairn, stating that the Railway Department was agreeable to the present road along the west side of the railway being perpetuated subject to the council submitting approved proclamation plans for dedication purposes. Railway land one chain wide would be given without charge for this purpose except from the goods shed to the stock yards, where the council would have tc acquire private land to keep the road-line six feet away from the goods shed and stock yards. It was decided to invite the District Engineer of the Public Works Department to inspect the site of the proposed alteration.
