CARMELITE PRIORY FOR AUCKLAND
SEVEN SISTERS ARRIVE FROM AUSTRALIA
(press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, February 15 When the Awatea berthed this afternoon there stepped ashore seven women whose life stories would resemble those of the hermits of earlier days. They are Sisters of the Carmelite Order, and they will establish in Auckland for the first time a Mount Carmel where they will devote their lives to prayer, contemplation and good works. The only other Mount Carmel in New Zealand was established in Christchurch three years ago. The sisters, who wear brown cloth habits, white cloaks and rope sandals, devote themselves to prayer for the world around them. Their own life is one of poverty and self-denial. Their order is the oldest in the Roman Catholic Church.
The sisters were met by Bishop Liston.
